What do you wear when going mudding and how deep?

Postby muddylittleminx » 07 Jun 2011, 02:35

I'm one for wearing feminine dresses with flip flops or wedges/ballarina flats but for me this isn't WAM gear. I'm curious to know if anybody else out there is so particular in their choice of mudding gear, and, if they were faced with a nice squelchy patch of mud wearing what was for them 'unsuitable' clothing; would it still be as enjoyable?

I love walking up to a boggy patch and wondering if I can take it on almost as much as sloping around in the mud itself....I say almost; wondering if my trainers will sink in to the point of loosing them in the marshy, sloppy, mud or clay and I like mud splashes up the legs of my jeans. I don't go for the deepest mud at the start of my walk; enjoy watching the colour of my trainers change as they succomb and I'll feel pleased if i've mudded them up to the laces or completely  Never gone deep enough as yet though to cover the bottoms of my jeans. Hence, I've walked away from many boggy patches feeling they were just 'too deep'....not good.

In my case I have to either be near a huge puddle, carry another pair of clean trainers to change into post mudding, or, have an endless supply of wet wipes to clean my trainers up. When i've been mudding feel totally embarassed if I see people as they'll naturally stare at the state of my feet and wonder where I've been; (I live in a city) one guy looked straight down at my muddy Converse and just stared right at me for ages....I wonder what he was thinking?

What do I wear? Whatever I like. Or whatever I just happen to be wearing when I get an unexpected opportunity to get muddy. But realistically it's usually jeans or leggings and ballet flats, trainers or boots if I'm out for a walk.

There isn't much deep mud near me, though there's plenty of muddy and peaty water. So often it's combined with a wade or a swim. But when I find some mud that's several inches deep I usually sit and roll in it. I love to get covered as much as possible. Then I wash off in the water or, if I happen to be on a bike, I put waterproofs over my muddy clothes so I can get home in them without raising comment on my messy state. If I'm planning a mud trip I usually wait for rain so I can get wet through as well, and wait for high tides if I'm going to the river.

I normally go mudding after dark, though, because the local waterways and ponds have too many nosey walkers during the daytime.

I'm lucky as i live on a farm. The pond dried up into thick black mud.Sometimes i wear shorts,i like to see if the mud will take my weight! It doesn't & i sink up to my thighs.Last year i bought some thighboots & the water had dried up .I took one step & sank up to my waist!
Thighboots are good as you can wash them & cheap to buy.Alway take a spare set of clothes to change into!
Mmm thighboots and mess!!!!!!!

I has been a while, but I used to have a very deep muddy area near where a farmer used to dump muck from the farm... It was to the top of my Hunters until I came down one day and found that there as a deep bit (unexpectedly sunk to my waist) - that was a struggle to get out of... And just as I was slithering out the farmer was just arriving with a trailer full!

That was an uncomfortable moment, sadly it was not a female farmer who leapt in beside me, but some old bloke who just gave me a pi55 off or I call the police sort of look! ;)

Good fun though

Usually I end up wearing boots, jeans and t-shirt or sweatshirt depending on the temp outside. I have stumbled upon a nice muddy area in the lower part of a local park that comes up to just above knee high to me. I rarely am able to get photo's as I can only walk there after dark dressed in that manner. I usually go in deep enough to eventually start having the water and muck flow in. There are a couple of places that are mid thigh deep so even in my thigh boots it can overwhelm them. I normally wash off the majority of mud in the deeper part of the stream so as to not leave tracks on the street heading back to my house or into my house for that matter.
The Following Pict is a before and after when I went to the park a few months ago. Granted this isn't the mud spot but it is where I can clean up. there's also about 6-12 inches worth of mud under the water so that explains how deep I'm standing.

Don't think I could safely go out alone to the park at night; I'm 5'1, female and with zero self defence skills :(
Although I'm very impressed by those pics :)

Well the park in question is only a couple of blocks from my house and a neighborhood park surrounded by single family homes. Since it's closed after dusk there's never been anyone around. I'd probably not want to chance getting caught if there were people around anyway. The area is a pretty quiet area though.

You're not an amateur. You know what you like and obviously have some experience. The great thing about getting messy is there are so many ways of doing it and every person likes their own thing. And why not? So much of this is about personal pleasure.

I had a nice sunny walk today. Lots of people about so didn't jump into any mud or water this time but as I hadn't been that way before I found lots of lovely boggy places for future mud fun. :)

I generally take a bag of clothes with me and change the outer layers a few times to give me several goes! In general, I'll have 3 or 4 pairs of tights on (which are great for filling up with soft clay between the layers and then squelching the clay around by sitting down etc), bra, stretchy lycra top then various skirts (ranging from tight micro-mini to long) and some 'slacks' (which usually go on last).

I generally start by making big muddy handprints on my arse and boobs then splatter random quantities up the inside of the skirt, lifting it up to see where it's landed. Then I'll fill up the tights layers and have a roll around. After repeating that with 2 or 3 skirts, I'll finally have a massive overload of clay into the slacks, which bulge nicely as the mud slides down between the legs of the slacks and the tights underneath and flows out again at the ankles.

Usually, shin deep at the edge of the pond I use is enough to achieve this but a few years ago, after the weather had been dry for quite a long time, another pond in the next field enabled me to go in up to my thighs. However, it's rather exposed so I was just in my cycle gear then to enable a quick getaway rather than having to change out of my femme gear.

Happy days! :-) [Don't seem to manage it at all often these days.]

Sounds like you need a mudding partner  Last time I went mudlarking was in a pond in a woodland park. Only about thigh deep max. Deep mud doesnt matter when youre rolling round in it though  Have fun
