Sally James Vs Holly Willoughby

Chat, flirt and fantasise about everything wet and messy

Oh no I fear Bill could be over exposed if he keeps working with Gilly. It could be a secret plan by Hayley for Saturday night in the pub, Bill will just give in to whatever Hayley desires...

Good plan really.

Okay, Hayley is stuffing her face (very prettily, of course) with Chinese take away so time for a nerd moment.....

You asked how people kept the equipment dry on Tiswas. Well, it wasn't quite as chaotic as it seemed. All the water was pointed in one direction, and you'll notice there was none in the Toyah sketch due to the live music. There were only three 'performance areas', the main set, the desk (pies but no water) and the cage - all well away from electricity. For sound most of it was covered by a boom mike (less likely to get wet), no radio mikes or handhelds. Even so, mikes did get soaked, so what happened then? In the words of one sound man when I was doing my work experience there, "We leave them on the fucking radiator to dry off".

It was great to see that clip, albeit from the last series. I did a feature for Time Out about that series so interviewed them all at that time. I have met and worked with Toyah a few times since the 70s and she's always been a laugh. I even have a "fuck off" card from her. I will explain what this means to anyone who asks! This was at least her third pieing on the show. She did a messy sketch with Tarrant on a previous series, got pied at the desk, and did this song. She also took part in one live version of the Bucket of Water Song getting soaked in a rather unexciting fisherman's smock (they were big in the late 70s!).

Of no interest to anyone except me...other personal in that Toyah sketch were Gordon Astley (now a DJ on Southern Counties Radio), Den Hegarty (former Darts singer now a lecturer and about to get a nice royalty windfall as Darts material will soon be reissued) and right at the end Fogwell Flax doing his Prince Charles impression. I don't know what happened to him and I'm not losing sleep over it. Had the great pleasure of getting pissed with Mr Heggarty in the ATV bar (that sketch was filmed in studio 3 at ATV Centre - now flats!). he was a great bloke and thinking of giving up sho biz to look after his ailing Mum at the time.

As for the Sally v Holly debate...I have met Sally several times and she was quite 'businesslike'. I have never met Holly - though I'd like to (esp as she only lives in Brighton), so hard to tell how much of her TV persona is for real. But she is a very game woman. Her TV shows have involved a lot of difficult things (like doing deliberately scary stuff) so she is up for almost anything. One thing that came across in MoM was that she had great comedy skill. Something they didn't exploit enough. Rather than turn her into the archetypal autocue-reading TV presenter (which isn't her forte, witness her disasterous hosting of Celeb Wrestling - a disaster in its own right), I'd love to see her doing more live, funny stuff. She even does good impressions.

Sat morning TV was made for her, but Sat morning TV is a dead duck now. I only hope she gets another presenting job that gives her the chance to use her comedy skills rather than just her looks.

Okay, I'll stop. Hay has finished her first course and has just said "You can't STILL be posting".

Bill,

Holly did a late night kind of show on ITV2 called Lip Service that took the piss out of guest on US talkshows, she swore on it as well and some rude suggestions, maybe you could get her to do an adult version of MOM!

I'm going to vote for Sally.

Holly is certainly much more up for getting messy, has a really great sense of humour and seems to really enjoy the messy scenes. Some of the thank you desk and gung tank scenes have been awesome.

I was also frustrated by the way SJ used to avoid the mess but she gets my vote for nostalgic reasons, TISWAS was on when I was in my teens so it was my first real sources of WAM.
Also the clothes Sally used to wear were a real turn on, cut off jeans and cowboy boots, thigh boots, denim waist coats.

I can only remember Sally getting really messy a few times, the scenes I remember are:
The viewer request one, Plastermind and one where she was a magicians assistant and Clive Webb poured several buckets of gunge over her when she was meant to disappear in one of those magic boxes.
In some ways because Sally used to avoid the gunge when she actually got messy it used to make it even more exciting.

I also used to be frustrated at the way Cheryl Baker also avoided getting messy on How Dare You.

Probably goes without saying, but I'm not related to her either.... Or to Andy (as far as I know) :)
