Bristol Splunch 11 - 18th May 2013

Postby Mike Nomic » 28 Mar 2013, 14:36

The eleventh Bristol Splunchwill take place on Saturday, 18th May 2013 from 2:00pm – 7:00pm in Horts Bar, 49 Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EP, and for those who are still peckish/thirsty later at some eatery/watering hole elsewhere in or near the city.

This is a vanilla meet; all over 18 from anywhere are welcome, and entry is free – I might even buy your first drink.

Have a look here for Bill's hilarious blog about the fourth Bristol Splunch.

How do I get there?

Broad Street is about twenty minutes walk from Bristol Temple Meads railway station, easily accessible from almost anywhere in the country, and there are several car parks nearby.

From the railway station exit, turn right along Temple Gate to the roundabout, cross over onto Victoria Street, continue over the river bridge into High Street, and bear gently left into Broad Street as High Street turns to the right into Wine Street. Horts Bar is about one hundred yards down on the right.

From the bus/coach station, exit onto Whitson Street, left into Lower Maudlin Street, cross Lewins Mead to Rupert Street and turn right. After about two hundred yards, turn left into Christmas Street, cross Quay Street and through the stone archway into Broad Street. Horts Bar is about fifty yards up on the left.

For those driving, at the bottom of the M32/Newfoundland Street, turn right onto Bond Street, take the first exit at the roundabout into The Haymarket, turn left into Bridewell Street, left into Nelson Street, right into Halifax Street and into the multi-storey on All Saints' Street - only £5 for the whole day, and closer than any other one.

To get to the bar, from All Saints' Street, turn right into Pithay, right into Tower Lane, left into Newmarket Avenue, and right onto Broad Street - the bar is a few yards down on the right. (Politically correct notice – other car parks are available in Bristol.)

For those flush enough (or subsidised) flying into Bristol (Lulsgate) Airport, take the 331 bus service to the bus/coach station and proceed as above from there.

Hotels – the usual chains are readily available: Premier Inn, Haymarket (next to the bus station, approx ¼ mile – full); Premier Inn, King Street (approx ½ mile – full); Hotel Ibis, Temple Quay (approx 1 mile – from £71); Hotel Ibis, Anchor Road (approx ½ mile - from £88); Travelodge, Anchor Road (approx ½ mile – from £77); Travelodge, Mitchell Lane (approx ½ mile – from £58); Holiday Inn Express (approx ¾ mile – from £81); Holiday Inn (approx 1 mile – from £136); Future Inn, Cabot Circus (approx ½ mile – from £82); and Novotel, Victoria Street (approx ½ mile - from £85). For those hotels that are not available for Saturday only, rooms seem to be readily available for two-night stays, either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday nights at very reasonable rates. Other hotels are available – check laterooms.com.

I’ll be hoping to do an outdoor mud shoot on the Sunday (always subject to the bl**dy weather and availability of sober drivers), but I’ll have to see how I feel much nearer the time – unless someone else wants to run a session on Sunday.

If you have any further questions, post them here or pm me.

Hi Mike & everybody else. I have every intention of attending for the meet but not for the meal. I shall be coming by train and (as usual  ) will probably get lost walking along the almost straight road to Horts Bar!
I'm looking forward to seeing everybody, but if I forget your name please excuse me and put it down to my senility.

Blimey, do I get bonus points for being organised? Trains booked and somewhere to stay sorted too [although not in Brizzle as it's cheaper to get the train a few stops and stay than a room in the city.] #tightget

I'm with you all the way on the #tightgit front Iain, lol. Time before last I stayed in a cheap B&B on the outskirts of the city, for a paltry £25 per night

Hoping to make this one too, and praying for fine weather - I wants more playtime in t'mud :D

Sad News

Postby gungemegood » 21 Apr 2013, 11:28

Folks, I have some sad news to report and an announcement about the arrangements for the Bristol splunch.

I was recently informed that my dear friend and former sploshing partner Ian died suddenly at the end of February 2013, aged 27 years. By arrangement with Mike Nomic, the evening meal following the Bristol splunch will be dedicated to his memory.

Ian was known as bondageboiir on the splosh website and he attended several of the Bristol splunches. He was friendly, sociable and very well-liked. He will be greatly missed.

It seems appropriate to dedicate the evening meal to his memory - Ian was not particularly interested in alcohol, but he loved his food especially pizza and ice-cream. Mike has kindly agreed to arrange the evening meal at an appropriate establishment which will be made known to splunchers on the day.

As usual, everyone who attends the splunch is welcome to attend the evening meal whether or not they knew Ian.

Special thanks to Mike.

Hey Falkor/gungemegood. Sending more big hugs to you. As you know I met Ian before and will be there at the meal in his memory, I'm glad we can do something to remember him and also to show our support for you. It's so deeply sad, he was so young, RIP Ian xx

Sorry to hear about Ian and I hope good memories of him are shared at the meal. I'm unlikely to be able to make this splunch but will hopefully make the next one instead
