Tart and Custard wrote:Just looking at You Tube there are so many great gungings on Ministry of Mayhem, for us that show and Holly Willoughby in particular had so many great messy endings and she seems to really enjoy it. In one clip they even get to gunge Cheryl Tweady (Cole) and she enjoys it and joins in. Another great clip we have spotted is Dick and Doms Comic Relief gunging of Ferne Cotton, she takes buckets of slop and a real dousing while trying to sing some tune or other. Clips are all worth a look and can we suggest a weekly gunging of Holly Willoughby at the end of that dreadful ice dance show she hosts with Philip Scholfield.

Always thought MoM was rather under-rated. As well as the slapstick there were lots of in-jokes (especially about Stephen Mulhern and The Doc's gayness), political incorrectness (Judge Mental didn't last long!) and some Tiswas-style irreverence towards pop stars. And freed from the autocue and the posh frock, Holly performed a lot better than she does even on This Morning. As for Fearne Cotton...I have to say she annoys me! Even in the DaD clip (was it a coincidence that the two competing shows on Sat morning were MoM and DaD?) she has that look of somebody going through it for charity whilst actually thinking it's completely beneath her cool image. The gunge might be watery but give me Holly on the Thank You Desk any day!

Bill

Totally agree with you, Holly is a star and what a brilliant clip. We should start a campaign to bring back traditional saturday morning TV.

Yes, Holly was terrific on MoM - I remember one early gunging where she pulled a toilet chain supposedly to cue up the next cartoon but which unleashed a load of slime over her head. She seeemd to rather enjoy the experience and her reaction reminded me a little of Emma in Messy Missies. And then of course there was Polly with her Trolley in Cakey Skate. Telly doesn't get much better than dressing up a former underwear model as a short-skirted French maid and throwing pies in her face.

I too was a big fan of Holly in those days (what happened to Saturday morning TV? Apart from slapstick it was a great way to find out what the hell the latest band the kids were on about looked and sounded like!). She genuinely looked like she was having a great time throughout the show, was funny and most importantly got messy ALMOST EVERY WEEK (something Sally James never did!). Now though she's been turned into "an autocue-reading clothes horse" as Bill described it when she made her first appearance on Dancing on Ice (we spent more Saturdays together in those days!). She also dressed well (great shoes!!).

I always think there is a huge difference between celebs who get gunged once in their life to be seen as a good sport on something like NHP or Comic Relief and someone like Holly who does it every week and never says "Look, I've had enough of this now..." I can't think of a single female stooge on TV at the moment. If the bosses think this is more 'politically correct' then they're wrong. Women need to be the butt of the joke too otherwise we're being discriminated against all over again. Stooges don't have to be stupid, they can be fun and feisty girls who are willing to take anything life throws at them to get what they want. Slapstick Super-heroine anyone?

Been chatting on Flickr to a couple from Scotland who dress as a rubber Superman & Supergirl and love getting messy. They look fab (even pixellated) and trying to get them to do something for Splosh!. I hope they won't mind me suggesting you check them out at www.flickr.com/photos/behind_closed_doors - they look a lot cooler than I would!

Here you go, Hay, memories of Sat mornings up to 2006! Not the messiest compilation but gives some idea of the spirit of the show - and apparently was liked so much by Holly herself she mentioned it on her Twitter account.

Holly Willoughby was at the centre of my fantasies for quite some time, I really miss her and MoM as well it was an awesome show with great WAM scenes but also hilarious adult gags thrown in. I remember the Doctor always saying "it's totally fact" but in his funny accent it actually sound more like "it's totally fu**ed!". I also miss Jim Davidsons generation game, this was regually filled with gunge and pies for unsuspecting contestants. We need more messy TV full stop and we also need good fun bubbly women presenting the shows.

Its official Holly is our hero. Mind you who would not want to be the new star of Saturday morning TV and get gunged every week viewed by national audience. It's one way to make a living.

I was a big Holly fan on MOM too. She always looked like she was having a great time and threw herself into the mess. I nactually would place her ahead of Sally James, Holly got messed up EVERY week, also Sally did'nt always join in with the same enthusiasm. I remember once on Tiswas Madness were on and Suggs started sprayin g foam atSally when she was trying to interview them and she was'nt very happy about it. Holly would just have sprayed some back! :D

Also, on Cakey Skate, she looked really hot in that French maids uniform and was always pied regardless of the outcome of the game. Liked MOM generally, it was fun, also remember once Stephen Mulhearn must have had an accident and his ankle was in plaster so they got a sexy blonde girl in a naughty nurses uniform to help him get about!

Holly always comes across as a good sport, I like her on Celebrity Juice as well, she joins in anmd has a laugh when Keith Lemon is perving at her. :D

I saw one where the Doctor and Stephen Mulhern (with barely disguised mirth) were discussing the merits of a hat or some such item, the Doctor repeatedly describing it as "swanky" but pronounced in such a way as to infer an apostrophe: i.e. "(it')s'wanky".

This was a character that seemed to be a reincarnation of Benny Hill if ever I saw.

At the risk of showing my age, Crackerjack was always pretty anarchic and messy, as was Right Charlie - Charlie Cairoli's TV show. The 80s seemed to up the messy stakes with programmes (usually hosted by Floella Benjamin) like Fast Forward (kids' sketch show) and How Dare You in which teachers and pupils (and presenters) got seriously messy. I think they were aiming to rival Tiswas on the other side.

Floella, like Holly, has moved on to greater things and is the only splosh icon I know in the House of Lords. Hopefully, Bill and Hayley will get their peerages soon, becoming the legendary Lord and Lady Muck, perhaps?

I can remember another sketch with Holly Willoughby and Jennifer Ellison which ended with Holly saying, 'Jen, it all went wrong...'

Yes, the game Teach 'Em a Lesson featured teachers (including attractive females!) sitting on swings over the 'gunge' pool where, within a given time, they were sloshed from head to foot with buckets of oatmeal. The teachers concerned appeared to be wearing the clothes (including shoes) they arrived in. None of your jump suits and goggles.

There was a compilation on Youtube a while back which has sadly now gone.

There tends to be a mess wherever Clive Webb is concerned...(he does a messy circus show even now - see the Splosh! Blog)

I can remember How Dare You!. It was a mix of messy games for the kids and sketches, and I much preferred the latter. Clive Webb is an evil messy genius and Bill and I went to see him the first time he came to Hastings when he and Danny did their amazingly messy decorating scene. We were in the front row and I got very slightly splashed. I sooo wanted to march up on stage and complain hoping they'd recognise the comic opportunity to turn me into the principal victim. But I was too shy (hard to believe, but true). I missed their second visit with the girl singing the Titanic theme but (watch how I haul this back to the subject) the singer having to carry on whilst being messily abused has appeared a lot onTV. Sadly I missed a lot of Sing If You Can (though I caught up on Youtube) a whole series based on this gag, but well remember both Freddie Starr and Russ Abbott doing versions, and The Grumbleweeds doing something similar but less messy. It's an idea I find very sexy. I'd love to do it but sadly my voice is terrible, so perhaps it may have to be giving a business presentation instead! I love trying to keep my dignity whilst being mistreated in all sorts of ways!! Sadly I am a chronic giggler so I can't keep up the stern look for long. Oh hang on, didn't Lulu once do a sketch with Morecambe and Wise where they are all three sitting on a wall with her singing - and take it in turns to repeatedly knock each other off? I remember loving that at the time, but perhaps I dreamt it.
