O/T What do you collect?

Postby wampony » 09 Nov 2010, 14:50

O.K., while we are all playing games and therefore being on here a lot, it's time to show everyone here what you collect, ideally the things you collect that you don't tell anyone else about lest they ridicule you for it. The stranger the better.

Oh, and you have to show a photo to prove it as well, makes it more interesting.

I will start it off, for the last year or so I have started to collect......MY LITTLE PONIES!!!
Not from toy shops, but buying them from charity shops, boot sales etc, usually saying they are for someone else. It is good fun looking for them, and getting them cheaply, then cleaning them, brushing and untangling their manes, then platting (spelling?) the manes and tails.

And they have a display cabinet of their own which I keep them in!

Pony, you're not alone... Search Wil Hodgson on Youtube and check out his old Edinburgh material. He's a local comedian & collector of 80's "girls" toys, with an armful of Care Bear tattoos.

I'm collecting beautifull memories, because collecting money didn't do so well. Sadly both turn out to be difficult. Besides that I'm a collector of modeltrains like mr angry, and old trash from the 60's and 70's, like furniture.

I'm realy sorry for my crap English... I think I had to complete the whole year on school, not only the first 20 minutes.

I'm also a railway modeller; I think there are quite a few of us railway buffs around here, so please come out of the closet (sorry, I should have said loco shed!) and admit your dark secret. After all, its not much worse than owning up to being a splosher!
Guilty secret - I used to collect engine numbers!

Yes I think there are quite a number of us who have transport-related interests, though I never used to collect numbers. Never quite 'got' that! I would describe myself as 'enthusiastic about...' rather than fanatical. Some people seem to have almost photographic memory abilities when it comes to that sort of thing - I generally just like to observe operations and enthuse.

O.K., I admit it, I am also a railway enthusiast, I have had model railways in the past of various sizes, although I don't at the moment.
Had a nice conversation the other night about B1 and D49 loco's of the LNER, while in the pub.

I have attempted to collect many things over the years including novelty and bad records (Lorne Greene singing the theme from Bonanza, Giant Haystacks single etc), TV and radio station idents, bloopers, messy clips and other unusual TV bits and pieces most of which are now freely available on Youtube thus rendering my attempts a total waste of time.

Other collections are not in any way attempting to be definitive but merely idiosyncratic so therefore best described as Nostalgia. For instance I am quite interested in trains but really only ones from my past (I have lived on London Midland, Western and Southern regions). I like buses too but only ones I've been on (London Transport, WMPTE, Midland Red, Southdown, Hastings & District etc). My Dad had shops during most of my life so I also like sweet and cigarette advertising material. I like classic cars from my childhood too but only ones I have seen around, nothing exotic. This might seem odd but when I bought a model of the 725 Green Line bus to Windsor cos it used to go down my road as a child, the collector I bought it from said scanning his vast treasure trove - "Yup, that's how I started..."

My most notorious collection though is my small batch of Fuck Off cards. These arose from a very pleasant evening in a pub with Katrina (of Katrina & the Waves) many years back. She was a ballsy woman and told me and a mate lots of great rude stories about her touring days - thoroughly entertaining. At the end of the evening, emboldened by beer, I asked if she had a photo she could sign. It wasn't long after Eurovision (1997) and she had one in her bag, signed it and gave it to me. I realised when I got home, she'd written "Now fuck off, Katrina X". I immediately thought what a great idea it would be to have a row of signed pictures of slightly famous people who I've met hanging up all with personal abusive messages! So on the rare occasion I meet anyone slightly well known who I think will get the joke I ask for one. Most really don't get it (so I don't ask), some have refused (even though I promise to keep them off the internet) but a few think it's great.

My favourite was probably Toyah. I met her on one of the shit late night TV programmes I did a few years back and suggested it. She agreed but claimed understandably to not carry pictures these days and said she'd send one in the post. Many weeks passed and I assumed she'd either forgotten or thought better of it. Then one day an envelope arrived and written in untidy handwriting on the back was "Are you sure this is what you want?". I opened it and there was a photo of Toyah signed "Fuck off, you bastard!" Result!

Sadly because I have promised to keep these off the net, to see my motley collection you will have to visit my toilet!
