Debatable cos don't forget there was Monte Carlo or Bust around the same time which had a similar range of characters. But Hanna Barbera (makers of Wacky Races) certainly did 'rip off' TV series and films. Top Cat was based on Bilko, The Flintstones was The Honeymooners etc etc.
PS Anyone remember Hanna Barbera's The Robotic Stooges - a cartoon based on the Three Stooges in robot form in space? Just me then

Oooh good point as the first airing of Wacky Races was 14th September 1968 whereas The Great Race was 14th October 1965 so you may well be right.

Thanks for the headsup SimonW!
I had some time off this Sunday so I decided to watch The Great Race. Possibly the worst film I've seen ever and certainly the unfunniest comedy ever. But yes, the pie scene was good!
I found this version on YouTube which is much better quality and the foreign language dubbing makes it slightly more comical...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOV3un2rGss
ps.
