My lady friend who lives 10 minutes from Somersham and I visited said muddy place today with a view to making it a regular place for our messy adventures!
How disappointing! We couldnt find this idyllic place as on the photos. Ok we did go during working hours and saw a few Quarry workers around but once on the path from the road (where we parked in a small lay by)
we couldnt venture off this track as it was guarded by barbed wire fencing and a lot of inaccessible undergrowth. We came to the main Quarry workings and there is a large gate and more fencing with many signs saying Private property and Tresspassers Keep Out!
As there is no mention of this in the above information do we take it that to get to the mud you have to tresspass? Or have the Quarry owners added some fencing and gates since you visited?

Right - it's in our diary, barring disasters, we will be there.
We won't be able to stay over, but should be able to get there by about 11 a.m. on the Sunday.

Suggestion:
Locations like this can change, sometime quite rapidly.
It's a long way for us to drive, so to make sure it's worth it, please could someone local check out the location a day or two before,
and just post a message here Go / No go

One other thing, looking at the OS map of the area, we can see there are several possible locations, some of which are right next to public
rights of way, and some not. We prefer not to trespass, if possible - or at least, not by much! Will we be "legal"-ish ?

Thanks,
Janet

I must admit i have been scouring Google Earth and have to agree with the above comments, and they live locally to this area.
I cannot find a way/area where you could park a vehicle on the tracks/roads approaching this place, Janet and Nick have also made a very valid point,I can vividly remember how quickly Barling went down ,within days when no spoil was being pumped and the whole area just became thick heavy wet clay which was virtually impossible toi move in and wash off.I have also compared the first pics Sploshman sent me and the ones posted on the forum and you can tell there is a difference within days there.

Any up to date info would be better as this area is at least 2 hours from London by road and about roughly the same from where i live in North Notts,(Yes, still hoping i might make it)plus some better info on direction of access/where to park etc would definately be helpful,as it seems there are several possible routes.

Yes it is an active, working quarry and you cannot vist during work hours and hence why the mud meet is planned on the sunday.

However there is another mud spot in the same area that has been recommended by fellow wammers and we'll planned to check it out.

So are you saying that people need to ignore the No Trespassing signs?

Very good question that? Is the hosting expecting people to basically trespass on private land.

If so is the host prepared to take up the legal arguement for the group should something go wrong?

If you have reservations about this then I think you should pm sploshman direct.

This is a two day event, if the mud is not for you lets not forget the Saturday meet in Peterborough.

Well I think everyone would love to get down and dirty in a huge place, but, whether or not this thread is intended for fun, a point where it might be contravening the law to do this, should be discussed publicly. For instance, would anyone gain access to an empty warehouse area for the aim of a massive splosh session? I don't think many would, so why does an enclosed quarry have different rules? Bottom line, if this is not public land, it is trespassing, and I think you'd need an extremely convincing argument for when the rozzers arrive.

Having been to this spot I can just imagine what people will make of 10 or so people climbing over the gates (which can be seen from a distance).
There is a strong risk of someone either calling the police or investigating themselves. Its such a shame we cant just go out and have fun but guess thats Britain for you.

On the descriptions given, I'd, seriously, keep well away from any area where there are gates and trespass warnings...they're there for a reason and a working quarry may well have hidden risks and dangers. My own "mud" escapades have been confined to pottery clay (no hidden nasties or sharp bits) with a former g/f in a nice warm and private room....

Could also make an interesting scenario when the cops arrive and the Daily Mail subsequently gets hold of some names and pictures......

Due to the concerns of other forum members, we have now postponed the Sunday mud event.

The Saturday drink up on July 31st in Peterborough is still VERY MUCH on, and we will re post this as a solo event on the forums.

Trespassing is an issue on this kind of thing. It is good to point out that many wammers often trespass at their own risk to make material for sites etc.

Please feel free to continue discussing all things to do with the above, but please do not drag this into the new Peterborough drink up topic.

What about all those who have booked hotels on this thread with a view to the second day? Are you going to re-inburse them?

Glad I did not commit to this meet/session

Andy.

Has anyone thought of asking permission? OK, so it's certainly going to be an odd request but as long as it's made sure that you'll accept your own responsibility for anything going wrong you may get away with it if you come up against someone who's willing to let you go.

Also: trespass is a civil matter, not a criminal one. The police will not turn up to a trespass call - it's not their "department".

If this offends anyone: I apologise for the content of this post. I've been drinking...
