Bristol Splunch No. 6 - 21st August 2010

Postby Mike Nomic » 10 Jul 2010, 21:14

The sixth Bristol Splunch will take place on Saturday, 21st August 2010 from 2:00pm – 7:00pm in Horts Bar, 49 Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EP, and for those who are still peckish/thirsty later at some eatery/watering hole elsewhere in or near the city.

This is a vanilla meet; all over 18 from anywhere are welcome, and entry is free – I might even buy your first drink.

Have a look here for Bill's hilarious blog about the fourth Bristol Splunch.

How do I get there?

Broad Street is about twenty minutes walk from Bristol Temple Meads railway station, easily accessible from almost anywhere in the country, and there are several car parks nearby.

From the railway station exit, turn right along Temple Gate to the roundabout, cross over onto Victoria Street, continue over the river bridge into High Street, and bear gently left into Broad Street as High Street turns to the right into Wine Street. Horts Bar is about one hundred yards down on the right.

From the bus/coach station, exit onto Whitson Street, left into Lower Maudlin Street, cross Lewins Mead to Rupert Street and turn right. After about two hundred yards, turn left into Christmas Street, cross Quay Street and through the stone archway into Broad Street. Horts Bar is about fifty yards up on the left.

For those driving, at the bottom of the M32/Newfoundland Street, turn right onto Bond Street, take the first exit at the roundabout into The Haymarket, continue into Rupert Street, and there is a large multi-storey car park on the right. (Politically correct notice – other car parks are available in Bristol.) Follow the walking directions from the bus/coach station from Rupert Street to reach Horts Bar.

For those flush enough (or subsidised) flying into Bristol (Lulsgate) Airport, take the 331 bus service to the bus/coach station and proceed as above from there.

Hotels – the usual chains are readily available: Premier Inn, Haymarket (next to the bus station, approx ¼ mile - sorry, full for one-night stays); Premier Inn, King Street (approx ½ mile – sorry, full for one-night stays); Hotel Ibis, Temple Quay (approx 1 mile – sorry, full for one-night stays); Hotel Ibis, Anchor Road (approx ½ mile - from £70); Travelodge, Anchor Road (approx ½ mile - from £63.60); and Novotel, Victoria Street (approx 1 mile - from £89). For those hotels that are not available for Saturday only, rooms are readily available for either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday nights at very reasonable rates.

I’m hoping to do outdoor mud shoots on the Sunday (always subject to the bl**dy weather), so if any of you lovely ladies want to sample the delights of West Country mud, this could be your big chance.

If you have any further questions, post them here or pm me.

I shall be there for the Saturday afternoon and evening but can't make the Sunday mud adventure.
Bill's version on his 'blog' cannot be bettered but here are my own memories of the August Splunch last year:

My version of the Bristol Splunch, August 2009:-

On Friday 21st August, two days after my 68th birthday; an event celebrated quietly (unlike the 30th birthday of another member of our company!), I set out by car for the city of Bristol. I allowed an extra day in order to see something of the city rather than rushing from the station to the pub then straight back to catch the train home.
Apart from getting lost in Salisbury (no big deal - I always get lost in Salisbury!) I arrived in the waterfront area of Bristol without incident. A few circuits of the area later I found the hotel, stowed the car under Millennium Square and got settled in.
After two very enjoyable half days of sightseeing I made my way to Hort’s Bar for the Meet. Several people were already present and at last I had the pleasure of meeting Bill face to face for the first time; the others, including Mike and Sammy-Jane were old acquaintances from previous meets. Among the notable arrivals soon afterwards were Jon & Eden, recently back from Canada and Nick & Janet, star of ‘Mad Macs’ in the Splosh Forum.
The afternoon progressed with pleasant chat and liberal quantities of alcohol, interrupted only by a topless bus, full of women (not topless), Darth Vader on a bike, scantily clad women, etc. until the eventual arrival of Sploshman, late as usual, indicated the close of the proceedings. After declaring an end to the formal(?) Meeting, Mike, our chairman, led most of us to an Italian Restaurant for the festive board.
The food was excellent and plentiful; Andy, opposite me across the table, attacked a pizza even wider than himself while Jammed and me each fought valiantly with our huge sirloin steaks. We were somewhat entertained by a nearby hen party at the adjacent table and by events outside in the street but it all added to the great atmosphere. The restaurant was very full but fortunately we were seated next to the open windows so that it was possible to climb over the sill then re-enter via the front door to get to the toilets!
Bristol nightlife was still in full swing as we made our way back to our hotels and I remember nothing more after falling into bed!

If anyone is wavering; DON'T! Just come along and join us. Meet the faces behind the user names. :D

Since I was planning on driving up to Shropshire from Kent that day anyway, I might be able to make a detour to Bristol for the afternoon! I'd stop overnight but those prices are out of my budget unfortunately, unless anyone wants to go halves on a twin (might be cheaper?!). I'll keep you posted, although I'll probably see some of you in Peterborough if nothing else :D

That's a great shame Richard, your assistance on Sunday last time was greatly appreciated - Sammy-Jane will be pining, I'm sure.

I hope to be along on the Saturday for a bit but not Sunday as next time I go to one of the quarries I want to make one of my own films and don't want to get in the way of Mike making his own film that day.
