Re: Bristol Splunch 4 - What Happened!
My version of the Bristol Meet August 2009.
On Friday 21st August, two days after my 68th birthday, an event celebrated quietly (unlike the recent birthday of another member of our company!), I set out by car for the city of Bristol. I allowed an extra day in order to see something of the city rather than rushing from the station to the pub then straight back to catch the train home.
Apart from getting lost in Salisbury (no big deal - I always get lost in Salisbury!) I arrived in the waterfront area of Bristol without incident. A few circuits of the area later I found the hotel, stowed the car under Millennium Square and got settled in.
After two very enjoyable half days of sightseeing I made my way to Hort’s Bar for the Meet. Several people were already present and at last I had the pleasure of meeting Bill face to face for the first time; the others, including Mike and Sammy-Jane were old acquaintances from previous meets. Among the notable arrivals soon afterwards were Jon & Eden, recently back from Canada and Nick & Janet, star of ‘Mad Macs’ in the Splosh Free House.
The afternoon progressed with pleasant chat and liberal quantities of alcohol, interrupted only by a topless bus, full of women (not topless), Darth Vader on a bike, scantily clad women, etc. until the eventual arrival of Sploshman indicated the close of the proceedings. After declaring an end to the formal(?) Meeting, Mike, our chairman led most of us to an Italian Restaurant for the festive board.
The food was excellent and plentiful; Andy, opposite me across the table, attacked a pizza even wider than himself while Jammed and me each fought valiantly with our huge sirloin steaks. We were somewhat entertained by a nearby hen party at the adjacent table and by events outside in the street but it all added to the great atmosphere. The restaurant was very full but fortunately we were seated next to the open windows so that it was possible to climb over the sill then re-enter via the front door to get to the toilets!
Bristol nightlife was still in full swing as we made our way back to our hotels and I remember nothing more after falling into bed!
Here's to the next one
Rich.
