Fire Extinguishers for wam

Postby Smiley » 19 Jun 2009, 18:03

Hello,

I have around 6 foam fire extinguishers which have been de commissioned from my work which i was thinknig of using for wam.

But are foam extinguishers safe to use for wam? Is anyone interested in doing a shoot with these? I can provide a location north of London if anyone is interested in this.

Be interested to here your thoughts.

Cheers

J

Well the times I've seen fire extinguishers used in wam where ones that were filled with
shaving cream foam. I'm not sure if you could do that with those. You have check out
what type of foam those things use.

Bill is right.

Extinguishers do contain various chemicals, whilst not deadly the long-term effects of some of the ingredients are not well known: best use them to put out fires and not extinguish people!

I know that a local venue here held a foam party and used lots of industrial foam which may well have been the fire extinguisher sort and lots of people got skin rashes! Next time they put up signs telling people to have a bath as soon as they got home which made the customers somewhat reluctant to enjoy themselves in it.

Off-the-shelf extinguishers are not a good thing to wam with. The foam contains certain chemicals which can irritate the skin, and certain types of dry chemical extinguishers can actually suffocate a person by getting in the lungs. However, If you had a water-based extunguisher, and filled it with some runny gunge like the stuff EC Gunge's Lulu used to use, that could be pretty sweet. Also, Wamfan has some sort of "foam cannon" he's used on the girls from time to time. Ask him how he does it.

As a safety guy, I have to recommend reading the safety data sheet for the particular make and model. It is typically available online. The foam could be as innocuous as soap to highly irritating.

The foam in a fire extinguisher could be dodgy to use, especially if someone has skin problems like dermatitis.

If you're gonna use them for wam purposes then possibly the best thing to do is empty them first, clean them out then put a safer & less harmful substance in. If not you could always flog them on ebay if they haven't been used!!!
I like pies and I like gunge but which is better? There's only 1 way to find out - FIGHT!!!
