Are There Too Many Commercial Posts These Days?

Postby Hayley » 03 Sep 2008, 11:18

Hi

This is a matter for discussion not an official view but this morning the majority of new posts were from commercial websites flogging their wares, some for the third or fourth time this week. Now we want to keep this forum as diverse as possible (ie open and encouraging to individuals, not just companies) and I wondered if YOU thought there was a danger of them getting swamped by the professionals. We are not looking to ban them completely as it is good to be kept informed of what if going on out there, and the pictures are always excellent so we need your imput, guys. What do you think?

Over to you...

Hayley

I enjoy and prefer the personal postings, rather than the commercials.

I think that it has been said before that UMD already has the most comprehensive lists and links for commercial sites, and it is easy for anyone to find personal preferences there. The Splosh site seems to cater better for the individual enthusiast and their own events and activities.

I also tend to be very selective in my own wam purchases...I don't now subscribe on an ongoing basis to any sites, and this year have only bought maybe a half-dozen or so downloads (of which at least three were the new Splosh ones :D ). And, to be honest, there is now so much available for free on the web!

I dont mind the posts, (cant say anything else as myself and Jammed have our own store!)

Though we do try to join in with the other threads, attend events etc. Plus we do give a lot away for free.

The only thing is some people do not join in with the community, they'll just turn up post a thread then go and never say hi / boo to a goose! to anybody. Thats a bit crap to be honest.

regards

As long as the professional posters give out enough freebies in their posts I don't really mind it. I do prefer the people just posting for the fun of it though, they usually offer a lot more.

The people and discussions are what this site are really about. However show me a picture of a messy naked lady and I probably won't complain.
Kind regards, Spinynorman and Frilly

Still messing about after all these years!

I think it's an ok balance.

Lots of amateur posts and lots of commercial sites looking for custom - and they usually provide a good selection of freebie pics or preview clips for all Splosh forum members to enjoy.

Have to echo what Andy said tho ... it would be better if those who are selling also joined in with discussions rather than just staying as long as it takes to pimp their wares, then fucking off instantly.

Good question Hayley. I, myself, have noticed a steady increase in the number of posts made by producers. There's been a number of times where where I've visited this forum for the daily news and it's been nothing more than a carbon copy of the UMD forum. For me, and I might suppose for some others, that's just a waste of everyones time.

I guess it just boils down to what direction you and Bill want this to go. Ultimately, you'll have to decide if you want to keep the SPLOSH forum unique unto itself or be receptive to producers flogging their wares. Believe me, the UMD forums started out pretty much the same way. A handful of producers and loads of amatuers. Now it's the complete opposite.

Since it's inception, I've always thought of the SPLOSH forum as just that..... the "SPLOSH" forum. I place where tried and true fans of Bill's work could come together as kindred spirits. But lately, I think it's been losing that charm as the producers incroach. Perhaps it's because the SPLOSH forum attracts people that don't visit the UMD and they're simply trying to target those potential customers?

Personally.... I like this place just the way it is.

Would a compromise be to ask producers to limit their posts here to, say, 'one a week' - even if they own 25 sites? Most only post once a week anyway, but it would stop those flurries when one company suddenly puts up several posts at once.

Again, like Hayley, only a suggestion...

How about creating another forum section just for website updates? Would mean that site owners can post all they like with news and updates and not bog down this section of the forum up.

I personally like the update threads as it keeps you informed when new stuff hits the street so to speak.

I quite like that idea Bill - it's a lesser extreme option than say, mossmanflys.

However, I think that if several commercial sites choose to ignore your request to update no more than once a week, then a seperate area for commercial sites would certainly be a good way to go!

I think there is a nice balance at the moment, but I tend to agree with andy - it'd be nice to see the people making these posts joining in a bit more with the lively discussion and debate we have here :D

Jon and me agree with Alext. Free pics are nice but we also want to come on here to chat and to have a bit of a giggle. I think the once a week idea is fine.
