For things like stilt-like PVC boots which you can't get in the washing machine and which have previously been liberally soaked in cake, whats the best substance to wash and de-smell with? We are having problems cleaning stuff up as we do not have access to washing machines/dryers because we are living with the oldies

Smelly :(
Question for you all out there in Sploshland;
For things like stilt-like PVC boots which you can't get in the washing machine and which have previously been liberally soaked in cake, whats the best substance to wash and de-smell with? We are having problems cleaning stuff up as we do not have access to washing machines/dryers because we are living with the oldies

Thanks for the tips
Unfortunately we didn't have time to really scrub and dry the boots again before they had to be packed away (We're flying to Canada today), so it's been a case of bag them and and hope for the best. Will definitely give bicarb a go next time, and have a vat of Febreeze handy.
Also, the treacle dispersed over time, so I was saved from having to stick the hand in, good to know there is an emergency speed solution too though
Probably the last post for a little while, until we're using a private computer out there anyway, so everyone keep well. Also, Bill, if you catch this, drop us an email to let us know how the editing goes, but don't attach pictures if you don't mind, we'll be using public PCs for a while!

feels like i've stumbled into a rather strange episode of 'how clean is your house'!Personally I find washing messy boots thoroughly then stuffing them with LOTS of screwed up newspaper,placed in airing cupboard or near radiator works well,changing paper next day helps too & stops the mould.Putting bicarb in sock inside aswell helps soak up smell too!Next week;how to rid your bath of those telltale stains!!
This could be my last regress,last exit for the lost!
