Thought for the day

Postby matt2matt2002 » 13 Jul 2008, 14:46

Just remembered.....

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus died from cow manure.

He was feeling un-well and when the docs. couldn't decide how to treat him, he decided to treat himself with a liniment of cow manure and bake himself in the sun.
He died the next day.

Just thought I'd share that with you.

You could always sterilise it by putting a load of it in a big oil drum, then adding some water and boiling it over a fire for about an hour. That should kill off any nasty bugs and worms.

touch wood, neither messyman nor i have suffered any ill effects from playing in fresh dung,
individual choice and trust play a big part, especially in where the stuff ends up lol,,
we have found that a good massage with antibacterial hand gel afterwards reduces any worries, although this stuff stings a bit.. very nicely tho.
just try it and enjoy.xx

Healthy and Safety

Postby muckyspeedos » 11 Feb 2009, 19:13

As a cynical 58 yo who grew up in the 50s and 60s before all this H&S nonsense, I'm very cynical about all these health scares. Of course playing in British seas full of human shit as they were back then, has no doubt given me a robust immune system.

There are several dairy farms in my neighbourhood and I have had several full-immersion baths in fresh cowshit in just my speedos. Very nice as well - fresh cowshit is soft, warm and creamy smooth. I went in up to my shoulders and just took great care not to get any on my face. Afterwards I just had a good wash in nearby ponds. I have never contracted any illness from cowshit. Bear in mind that in the UK cows are usually well looked after and comparatively disease free - just make sure you don't have any open cuts. You are far more likely to be killed or end up in hospital travelling to the farm.

Cowshit is also reckoned to be good for the skin - in fact should you develop athlete's foot just bathing your feet in cowshit works just as well as all those expensive lotions and creams. I can confirm the treatment works.

The only major precaution you need to take is to check the depth of the manure pit. All the ones I've been in have been waist deep - sit down and the shit comes nicely up to my shoulders. However some are deep so I always try to find a shallow bit then carefully wade in.

Pig shit is another matter. I've heard that it's likely to contain significant amounts of dangerous pathogens. Pigs, like us, are omnivores and eat just about anything. Cows on the other hand are herbivores.

If cowshit was all that much of a health risk, why are dairy farmers generally so hale and hearty?

Anyone like to join me in some shit wallows come the warmer weather? I live in N. Cheshire.

I'm reminded of Edward Jenner, who, in 1796, impressed by the fair, unblemished skin of dairymaids started to innoculate people with cowpox to prevent against smallpox.

No! I'm not quite old enough to remember it first hand!
