Tesco's item limit

Having finally finished uni and got home 'n' that me and Eden went to store of sticky wonder to start stocking up for our first session in a while. Went to the counter with a couple of bags of cake mix, some ice cream sauce and a whole load of budget angel delight mix...

Checkout guy: "Erm, how may of these are there?"
Us: "20"
CG: "We have a bulk buy policy, you can only buy 5 at once... are you having a party?"
Us: "Er... yeah."
CG: "I'll check with the supervisor"
*brief wait*
Supervisor: "We have a bulk buy policy so you can only buy 5 of one item at once... if you want more you should place an order with customer services beforehand, then you can collect them"
Us: "Oh. right"
*mildly awkward silence*
Supervisor: "Tell you what, just put them through this time, but make sure you order in in the future"

Not sure if anyone else has encountered this problem, I know we hadn't until now. Ordering in isn't so hard, and we were stocking up a bit in advance so it wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't let us buy it all, but this is a heads-up for anyone before they go for a spontaneous splosh shop.

That happened to me too with budget cans of beans
I was made to leave some behind at the till but i did have a messy shoot planned that night so i went back in to the store a few minutes later and bought the rest at a different checkout hehe
Luckily the store was packed and my crime went unnoticed lol

Being a non-driver, I get our stuff delivered by Tesco Direct. This frequently involves 10-plus cartons of custard without prior notice and has always been delivered.

This is so that

1) you don't fill the shelves of your own shop wth Tesco products
2) if you discover that they are accidentally giving away more Tesco points wiht a product than are equivalent to the price of the goods, you can't buy up a pile then give the goods away free in the car park
3) other customers won't complain when you clear the shelves

Dunno whether you'd be willing to give the honest explanation as to why you want to buy so much......

I'd noticed a while back that my local Tesco had signs explaining this policy in the bakery bit, but it hadn't occurred to me that it was carried right through the store. As you said, fine if you're planning ahead, but a bit of a pain if you suddenly feel the need for a spontaneous session...

Still- on a positive note, does this mean we'll be seeing new pics of the lovely Eden sometime in the near future.....?

As Eden said, we fully understand the policy, just thought we'd spread the word in case anyone hadn't encountered it. Also, if you picture it, it's a mildly amusing scene - a couple of staff members, us and a big pile of budget desert mix on the belt

I ran into that one a few years ago when trying to buy 36 cans of Value Custard. We've now switched to buying the 1kg cartons of own-brand (as opposed to Value), partly because of the limits, but also because we realised that the time saved in being able to open a box with scissors is worth far more - 10 boxes is the equivalent of 30+ cans, and opening 30 cans takes ages, even with an electric tin opener.

The staff at Tesco here said that the limit is max 10 of any one "Value" range product, and it's mainly to stop small shopkeepers from buying them up, taking the labels off, and selling them on for 10p more than the Tesco price. The Value ranges are meant for people on very tight budgets.

Unfortunately the one product I really want from Tesco I can't buy - one of their current issue uniform skirts, in a size to fit one of the ladies here. The trousers come up on eBay every now and then, but so far, no skirts.

I was in Tesco today and I asked what the limit was on Value goods and at my branch it is 6, but I was told if I needed more then i should see the duty manager first and there wouldn't be a problem buying more than 6 items.

Hahaha!!! I used to work at a Somerfield forecourt! Who ever said they were cheap?!?!?!? Even with my 10% discount and less then minimum wage pay, I still couldnt afford to stock up there! Had to go all the way to Tesco's! I never encountered the problem of too much stuff. Even when I did buy loads of Tesco's Value shaving foam...kinda pleased they didnt stop me! My response probably would have been "im a bit hairy at the mo. due for my full body shave!"
