Filling a water balloon with mess?

Postby alext » 17 Jun 2008, 14:11

Does anyone know how I might go about filling water balloons with anything except water? An example would be porridge, custard or spaghetti, something like that?

It's something that's stumped me for a while - the only thing that comes to mind is to use a squeezy bottle of some kind, but it doesn't always work!

We have tried this and it is far harder than it looks. It is also rather disappointing, the balloon bursting but the mess just falling straight down rather than exploding with the balloon.

But perhaps we were doing it wrong.

I don't know how it's called in English, but how about this?

I think it will work for the most liquid substances, but it's a bit harder with spagetti...

How would be the effect if the balloon is exploding under your clothes? :D

Hi Alex,

what about this device ?

http://www2.westfalia.de/shops/agrishop ... e_3_3l.htm

A simple funel as Vera suggests will not work as the baloon is stronger then the force the mess is producing.

Another, more complicated methode would be to have a box or a tube where you you attach the baloon and and then close the cover so that the baloon is inside the box/tube now evacuate the box /tube and the ballon will be like infalted but not from the pressed air in its inside but from the missing air on its outside and can be filled easily.

Hope that helps

A funnel won't work as them mess needs to be pumped in under great pressure. A problem that has perplexed me now for a while.

There is one solution I may try. Blow a normal balloon up fully, then release the air leaving the balloon baggier than before (thus more room inside the balloon for the mess), then personally I would try powder paint that you mix with water, fill with plenty of powder to get a thick substance then fill with water, tie a knot and shake before throwing so the powder mixes thoroughly. I'm just not sure how well the powder will mix.

My Girlfriend wants a paint balloon fight and I'm trying to think of ways to keep her happy :P .

it is possiable but you have to think carefully what you can fill it with ive filled ballons with paint and a few other things before using a sqeezy sauce bottle but unless its runny and quite light it wont have the desired affect of a water ballon and will end up as a little pile of whatever substance on the floor rather disappointingly.

hope that helps stig if need any more help pm me. mate

I use the following method.

If you take a 1 litre plastic drinks bottle and fill it with the required messy substance (the sloppier the better) and then blow up your balloon as normal (only tried this with normal balloons and not the smaller thinner water balloons).

Take the blown up ballon and carefully stretch the open end over the drinks bottle it will make a quite good seal. Carefully invert the bottle and support the balloon and thanks to physics the slop and air will change place filling your balloon. You then need to remove the balloon and tie it up as normal (this can be very very tricky)

I read this method on UMD a long time ago and thought it sounded like it would work. I have used it for filling balloons for a while and its great for making messy false breasts that can be popped filling your clothes with slop, and it works like a charm for custard and angel delight (which is great as it sets whilst in the balloon).

However... if you screw up the process you can spray the room in slop and the effect of popping the balloon can be a bit hit and miss, sometimes they go with a bang and other times with a gentle pop.

Just to make it clear you can cause a real mess if you get this wrong!

I've never actually tried making mess balloons (or water balloons for that matter), but from the ones I've seen on TV, I got the impression they were half full of mess and half full of air, so there was still pressure and hence a definite "pop" when they burst - though when the baloons are held above someone and popped, the bulk of the mess does tend to fall down rather than spraying very far. Possibly a thrown balloon bursting would result in more general splatter?

Might be worth investigating Dungeonmaster.

CarolTV - I like that idea, I'll give it a go!

Might also be worth trying custard powder - fill the balloon with that first, then add the water and let it mix while it's in the balloon.

Thanks for the ideas guys :D

hey. been lurking for a long time but this thread has brought me out of the closet so to speak.

The best way to fill balloons with mess is to use the bottle method described above. When i tried it i used normal ballons but it should work fairly well for water balloons as well. i used 2 litre coke bottles and nastrol gunge whem i did it.

fill a bottle with ur gunge then blow up ur balloon. Attach ur balloon to the bottle. turn upside down and by the power of physics the gunge will go in the balloon and the air will go in the bottle.

i found that i could get 2 bottles of gunge into 1 standard balloon. (thats 4 litres for the mathematically challenged) Obviously water balloons will hold less.

tying the ballons off can be difficult as they tend to be very slippery but perseverence will see u thru.

when i used this method i burst the balloons with a pin held in my mouth. the majority of the gunge fell straight down into my face, however some got as far as the ceiling and the remains of the balloon were found on the other side of the room.

overall its a lot of hassle but it can be worth it. I would imagine that different substances would react differently when the balloon bursts. (i.e. lighter gunge like shaving foam or sqirty cream would fly everywhere.)

nice to meet u all btw.

Strange what gets people out of lurkerdom!

Nice to see you and hear from you, Stu. Don't go, now you've made the effort!

Bill

PS My experience was that foam didn't go everywhere - disappointingly.

Instead of a balloon you can also use a very thin plastic bag like the ones that supermarkets have for putting fruit in. Fill them with gunge then tie the top. They burst very easily on impact if dropped on someones head or thrown in someones face.
