Countdown

Postby paulthepieman » 14 Apr 2008, 11:47

I know this will make me sound like a geeky swat... But on Fridays editions of Countdown of Channel 4, the final anagram round the Countdown Conundrum none of the contestants got the answer and when the turned the board it revealed the winning word was SPLOSHING.

If only the sexy Carol Vorderman (in a short tight gold minidress by the way) and Susie Dent (the strangly sexy one with the dictionary) had volunteered to demonstrate the definition of the word.

Really?

Now that would be a breakthrough!! Sploshing makes it onto the most respectable of daytime quiz shows!

Disappointed nobody got it - obviously till some work to be done!

Does that mean it can be found in the dictionary?

Using the Uni's subscription access to the online Oxford Dictionary, I can say yes... but with the following definition

OED wrote:a. trans. To splash (something); to cause (something) to move with a splashing sound. b. intr. To move with a splash. Also int. and as adv.

It also gives quotations, such as:

Wodehouse wrote:I began to sing like a bally nightingale as I sploshed the sponge away.

That said, anyone who saw it on TV probably looked it up on google... and that would have brought them here

This is surely work writing a skit for the Silly House, 2 contestants (Dolly and Sammy Jane if poss), Gilly as Carol Vorderman, contestants call out vowel or consenant and Carol puts them on the board but unfortunately they keep spelling out names of substances which end up over her head.

As for the numbers game I am sure everyone would like 2 from the top!!

Yup, does sound good.

Can't do Des O Connor though! Have to bring back Des Lynam for the day!

Commission will come in the next life when, I'm told, my reward will come as well.

No commission needed guys, although if you did want to e-mail be a free copy of the full film I wouldn't complain (only joking!)

Bit of an after thought to the idea, how about Sammy-Jane playing a posh stuck uo contestant whose answers are all types of gunge whilst Dolly plays a bit of a thick chav who keeps challenging the words, so the lady in dictionary corner (hopefully the lovely Kate from FHM) has to demonstrate the meaning of the words by covering Gilly in them.

Then in the last round the conundrum the word could be something like GILLYSTURN (i know its 10 letters not 9) which would be the key for Gilly to get her revenge on the other 3 and a complete free for all to break out.

I saw that episode! (and was ashamed that I didn't get it!) The man in the audience who got the answer was very confident when he said "It's sploshing!". Obviously one of us.

I have nothing useful to contribute to this thread but can't let the opportunity pass without boasting that my girlfriend/partner appeared as a contestant in one of the early 'Countdown' programmes. She is a former Scrabble champion so knows many of the contestants personally (many of them are Scrabble players).

....and you thought that Sploshing was a minority interest!!!!

Can't stop now, off to Bilbao tomorrow! :D

carol in custard may not be such a dream......to my knowledge she has got messy at least twice ......and on the bbc at that!

she got a right royal gunging on NHP including some "washing powder" at the end.

she also self pied on Comic relief a couple of years back

maybe Carol is the not-so-ssecret splosher in the countdown team!!

Haha, I'd not seen the Noel's House Party one before, she certainly looked like she had a good time there... and appears to decide that goggles weren't required.
