The fabulous girls [could have been more dressed-for-mess though, the swimsuits were a cop-out]....
As you may know, we too were deeply wary of getting involved with Graham Norton for precisely the reasons you outline. However, I think he wasn't too hard on us. Having said that, we did our best to limit any damage. I deliberately didn't appear (although invited to) as I thought a fat, ugly 50-year-old was too soft a target for Norton's 'wit'. If it was girls only he was less likely to be a bitch, so I made an excuse and stayed away.
The swimsuits were very much the producers' idea I'm afraid. We suggested costumes but they wanted it to be 'sexy' and to conventional eyes sexy equals near-naked. Not a view I share personally, but a commonly held one.
I was also a little concerned what Sandy Toksvig would say. She is feminist in her views and I was waiting for the outcry. But when she was reading No 39, all she said was "I've never seen beans served that way before..." Quite a let off bearing in mind she was looking at Suzi with her legs wide open and baked beans lodged in her pussy lips!
