While screen-grabs might be a bit of work, I'm with Hayley on this one at least as far as descriptive text goes.

I've been asking for years on various forums for people to put just a little description with their links. It's not so important with YouTube, but when a private site owner or enthusiastic couple put pictures up, they could really do without lots and lots of people downloading their stuff (and pushing up their bandwidth bill) who then find it isn't to their taste and just delete it.

Also, the entire Internet depends on inter-co-operation between lots of bandwidth providers to work. It's just generally polite and nice to avoid causing people to download stuff they're not interested in.

(actually this particular thread isn't bad, "miniskirt" told me in advance I'm not likely to want to watch the vid, so thanks to Phantom for stating it)

This isn't an argument, it was only a suggestion. Personally I find it a bit frustrating when a post consists of just a link and a one line description. But if everyone else is happy, then fine.

Funnily enough I thought about having a separate forum for links too - not because they are boring but so people have them all together so they can browse the lot easily. Also like the stories, it means they can be read at any time without being bumped down to page five by more topical topics. What do you think?

All I am trying to do is prevent the main forum from just being a selection of links and promos for commercial sites, and keep it fun.

Its not really a case of putting people to any bother, its just I'm not sure how one would go about putting up screenshots. As far as I can tell the person would have to go to youtube, run the video, use some sort of program to generate screenshots, save them to the computer, upload them to a photo sharing site, and then link to them in the post.

It just seems a little convuluted to me

Maybe we could have a Splosh! group or community on youtube and post all our favourite clips there (which would have screen shots I think) and then just discuss them here???

I know it was only a suggestion not an argument.

on other things i'm on like LJ and other forums you can embed the first image and roll it from a forum .. not sure if it works on here but here goes an attempt on this linked one

damn didn't work must be how forum is set up ..... so looks like will only work with a link and click method .. but some kind of description even if only brief woould be handy ie 2 girls in mud, tv presenter gets pieing etc

I think you'd have to add some code to the forum to allow the embedding of youtube videos. I googled adding youtube videos to phpbb and quite a few links came up, for example http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=375183.

I dont think its dead straight forward, but anyone with a bit of computer expertise should be able to do it. It would be quite cool to have the videos showing up directly in the forum. It wouldnt take up any os Splosh's space or bandwidth as the videos would still be hosted on youtube but we'd be able to see the videos here without having to click through.

If the usual splosh boffin isnt available I'd be happy to offer my services if Hayley and Bill were interested.

I have several youtube movies embedded on my own website and I've noticed that they are a lot slower to play than if you watch them on the main youtube site.

Having the clips here in the forum would be a nice extra option, but it's quicker to just click through to youtube and watch.

1. go to the youtube clip
2. find the clip you're watching in the 'related' list (usually the top 1)
3. right click on the pic
4. choose 'properties'
5. select and copy the address (URL) of the image
6. post a response and add the URL inside a [img] tag
