Nominations for the Splosh! Veteran's League

Chat, flirt and fantasise about everything wet and messy

Postby tony » 04 Jun 2006, 13:22

Thanks for the reply Bill and Hayley. We old sploshers remember those shows and sketches from many years ago because there was so little material around at the time. You got a good food fight or fully clothed soaking on TV once or twice a year if you were lucky and then you had to watch it live and just the once! If Charlie Drake was on there was a good chance of real mess but if your Dad decided to watch the other channel on the one family set, then that was that! My how times have changed!

Thanks for all you two have done to bring us so much more gooey stuff to enjoy.

Yes, I for one missed a lot of ITV comedy cos my Dad hates light entertainment (still does!). Consequently Charlie Drake's The Worker would be ditched for Panorama!

The good news is that more and more of this stuff is coming out on DVD in compilations. I know the Tiswas ones are a bit naff and you have to wade through a lot on non-messy stuff to get the good bits (which sometimes aren't anything like as good as you remembered them) but it is still good to keep them for posterity.

TThe obvious question is what did they do? I'm intrigued. Does Charlie the Amazing Memory Man recall? Or does Google say?

Have to agree on that one, Bill ... I've often tracked down a Tiswas scene only to find it nowhere near matches up to how I fantasised it.

I bought the first three Tiswas videos (not sure if there were ever any more) and although I did enjoy them, they were kind of a let down compared to the memories. I think I bought them when I was in my late 20s and I originally watched Tiswas on telly when I was in my early teens.

Funnily enough, I had the same experience with WSM TV!!

Before I was aware that Splosh! (and other WAMmers in the world) even existed, I had my eyes nearly pop out of my head one night, as all my dreams came true. I was watching James Whale late at night, and it was the night Splosh! did a scene (with Bill dressed as Robin from Batman).

I couldn't believe what I was seeing!!! Sexy women, sexy dresses, all kinds of messy foods, stripping off, knicker filling. I almost came on the spot!

A couple of years later I FINALLY tracked down a copy of WSM'll fix it (I didn't have internet at that time, so it wasn't easy).

I do still love that whole scene - but I was AMAZED at how much my memory had distorted it. There were three girls in the scene. But somehow I'd remembered it as having 6 or 7 girls.

It's crazy how the mind can play tricks on us ... and sometimes I think it's better to just leave my memories as they are, even if they're distorted.

Think I would need a lie down after Clown Julie mammorising hubby. No wonder his mind is a blank! I also remember some show with possibly Jim Davidson, where a woman was covered in custard through a door. Think it might have been Up the Elephant and Round The Castle and it may have been Marina Sirtis. Being the resident Trek fan she was Lt Cmdr Deanna Troi, who also had a mubbath scene in TNG. She was also naked in the 70's remake of "The Wicked Lady" . It also featured a topless Glynis Barber now on Emmerdale at the moment.

Part of the problem with Tiswas compilations (as anyone who saw Raiders of the Last Archives will know) is that there are only about 10 Tiswas programmes left to pick bits from (out of over 300 shows made). The good news is that after a plea on their website, home recordists (I think we can guess why!) have come up with another four editions.

The Raiders show also featured a famous scene of Tarrant presenting a mud wrestling show which wound up with him being dragged in with the bikini clad girls. Apparently that had been 'lost' too. I was surprised by that cos I've had it for years!

I bow completely to Charlie and Julie's memory when it comes to Seaside Special and Max Bygraves. Neither were part of my regular viewing, though they would have been if I'd known. As for Jim Davidson, his best custard throwing exploits were on his version of the Generation Game - the air stewardess getting four thrown over her simultaneously being particularly pleasing. I do remember Up the Elephant... but didn't see too mcuh of it as I hated him even then!

Indeed his best work probably was the Generation Game and all the gunge, pity Melanie Stace seemed to only get wet and the Lea woman was game for a laugh and a damn fine cleavage as well. I reckon a Splosh! tribute with DD and Julie would be a fine idea. We could have Gilly as Gym Nasium. Did he not claim to be the Phantom Flan Flinger at one point as well. Would love to see the full version of Sheena Easton's deluge of pies and slosh without the awful credits from the Tiswas VHS.

Bet there is more Betamax or Philips V2000 copies of TISWAS out there!

I sound ancient and I am only 35!

Think of it as being a student of history, slapstick history.

I know one person with some old Betamax clips of Tiswas!

Following on from the comments about How Dare You. I'm pretty sure it started off in the Tyne Tees region because i remember it very very well there. It was way way more messy to start with than later on.

The original presenters if I recall were John Gorman, Clive Webb and Cheryl Baker and she did indeed get messy on many an occasion in the early 80's. Carrie Gray later married David Grant and became Carrie Grant the singing coach that has appeared on Fame Academy.

How Dare You went downhill in later series but the early series was like vintage Tiswas in a game show format.

How Dare You was made by Tyne Tees so that fits in (they were one of the first regions outside the Midlands to take Tiswas).

Floella Benjamin was also a presenter though I'm not sure of the precise order of them. I have some b/w publicity pics from the series somewhere with a very young (and frankly gorgeous) Carrie Gray (now Grant). I had no idea she was Carrie Grant until Julie mentioned it.

I have some clips of Carrie getting sploshed on How Dare you its on an old tape I have with loads of old tv clips on. I also have clips with all the teachers getting loads of gunk and gunge thrown over them.

Ahhh time for a tape i feel.
