Outside of sploshing, fetish clothing (including collecting pvc macs), pub rock music, a crush on various ex-WWF wrestlers, a bizarre desire to take part in one of those cowboy-style saloon fights, motorbikes though I'm too scared to get on one, Jack Daniels, snogging big ugly blokes and gorgeous voluptuous women I have no odd hobbies at all.

Boring, middle aged woman, that's me!

various ex wrestlers... mike is the bastard son of steven seagall and The Undertaker.

Gimme a bit of bret hart...anyday. The Ultimate Warrior can have a go and all.

odd hobbies are the best!

I think you're probably right in that the Gresley Pacifics were the pinnacle of the first streamlined age, though the fully-lined Coronation Scots were pretty cool too. The snag, of course, is that the streamlined overpanels tended to make maintenance more of a bind. The raked front on Gresley's A4s must have had more of an aerodynamic effect than the curved nose of the Scots, though.

Turning to more moden motive power, it is somewhat astonishing to realise that the HST turned 30 this year. It is a beautiful design for a modern machine, partly because BR recruited heavily from the aerospace industry during the development of HST & APT. It still looks modern and arguably better-looking (certainly cleaner lines) than some of the latest trains.

This Channel 4 microsite is quite good about the "race to the north".

While we are on the subject of hobbies and machines, being a hgv driver for a living i am in to cars and trucks, cars being the main reason im in so much debt, but i love driving and am constantly changing cars cos i want something different, and when i work as a driver on the agencies id have a different motor averyday so it was cool, ive been in my current job for 18 months and have the same truck all the time, so im getting bored now, guess i have never grown up cos i was always obssesssed with trucks and cars as a kid, and my dad was obssessed with buses and trains so i never stood a chance really.
I used to have tonnes of model railway stuff at one time, but needs must when i need to pay debts so they all went :(

Driving around as much as I do, trucks fascinate me. Would love to have a go driving one. Also wanted to drive an Alvis Stalwart* when I was a kid (well it makes a change from being a ballerina!).

Awww that's no fun.

It would be fun to be gunged on the back of a flatbed and driven round town!

Hayley

PS Or do a pie fight version of the Queen "Breakthrough" vid on a wagon pulled by a steam train!

Do you still want to drive a Stollie (nickname for a Stalwart) Hayley? i drove one in the late 80"s in the Army. You need to have a left leg and arms like Popeye to do the clutch and steer it no power steering in one of those and a clutch pedal you need to stand on  :) .

No, I haven't rigged this forum to talk about my various obsessions but since one or two have arisen....

I did indeed go on the run celebrating the anniversary of the Mallard's speed record and got a brief ride in the cab. I also saw it being prepared filled up with coal and water etc very early in the morning. It was for a feature in Mayfair magazine - in those glorious days when tit mags had articles on trains, cars, old planes etc...quite a lot of which I wrote or edited! It was due to go back into York museum after that and unlikely to to be run again which made it very poignant.

Living for a while as a child near Watford Junction, I was on the LMS side of the country and whilst even I am not old enough to remember the Stanier streamlined Coronation Scots (it was all British Railways by then) , I did see the steam-hauled all-maroon Caledonian and the Royal Scot go through a few times. Also, whilst I agree steam looks much more dramatic from a nostalgia point of view I have a great fondness for the old DMUs, green Southern Electrics, and the first Inter City pantagraph trains. On the subject of the latter, my Dad took me to Euston once to see the trains and was mortified because the place was being knocked down to build the new station, so no locos. Me, I was just as excited cos it was a part of history. Later I was taken on a very early Inter City train up to Liverpool with my Mum. It seemed impossibly smart then! But having said that, nobody could carry their coffee from the buffet car to their seat without spilling it cos the track was so rough at 100 mph.

My other claim to fame is having travelled as a treat when I was a child on the Brighton Belle...I have a friend up the road who collected everything Pullman and actually has two chairs and a table from the Belle along with all the crockery etc. He very kindly gave me a tray and a menu for my last birthday! He thinks I'm a God cos I went on the real thing.

Okay, Dolly you can wake up now.

PS Does any else remember Autopoint - the annual contest on Grandstand between the Army and the London Motor Club held in a swampy, hilly bit of Wiltshire? The teams had to race from one point to another (always via the swamp) against the clock. I mentio0n it cos there was always a Stalwart in that - and Raymond Baxter used to commentate (see another thread).

Sorry i'm giggling again, bill was in the porn industry and got paid to right a piece on trains. Thats mad, did remind that when I was a kid we where members of the Worth Vally Railway for a while, Oakworth station, that brings back a few memories.
