I've seen this debated a few times (on UMD) in the past, and I've always kind of poo-pahed Holly.
Who could possibly hold a candle to saucy Sally James eh? She got messy with decent pies and real food (beans, pudding etc) ... not watery gunge and weedy spray foam.
Sally was at the helm of Tiswas - the best kids TV show ever. Total anarchy. Holly presented MOM which was mostly utter crap you had to suffer through in the hope of seeing some decent mess.
BUT - I followed this link http://www.hollywilloughby.co.uk/new/ga ... gunge2.htm the other day, and found myself changing my mind.
What I like about Holly (apart from how sexy and bubbily she is) is the way she seems so up for the gunge - like she enjoys it. That was the thing about Sally ... she was often trying to escape the gunge or complaining about it (although in some ways, that made it all the sexier for me - the protesting victim).
Holly, however, has no qualms about sitting there and taking bucket after bucket of slime and water, as her fantastic breasts become more and more defined by her soaked t-shirt or dress. She's a WAM trooper!
I think us wammers will always compare and debate Holly and Sally.
What do others think?

Sally James Vs Holly Willoughby
Oh dear, I fear this will provoke Bill's rant about the demise of Saturday morning TV....
But here's my opinion on this vital subject (sod who should be Prime Minister, this is much more interesting!).
I would go for Holly every time. Why? Cos in fact Sally didn't get messy that much in Tiswas, certainly not every week as Holly did for a long time. Sally did run away from the gunge a lot on Tiswas which, contrary to what you say, only used foam and water except for that "viewer request" sketch (Bill says there was also a Mastermind sketch where she was hit with buckets of different coloured stuff, only about five buckets, and it was pre-recorded). Holly not only got caked with real cakes almost every week, gunged a great deal, but did the Thank You desk for weeks on end which involved having to read something whilst being hit with bucket after bucket of admittedly piss-poor gunge ALL LIVE without looking pissed off (something her fellow presenters couldn't manage). I think even a die hard Splosh! model might find that difficult. Oh and in the last show she got covered in real beans and gravy!
Holly's attitude was also very good. She looked like she was having a good time. And she often wore the wet/messy outfit for a while after (something that very rarely happens in TV slapstick and Sally certainly never did).I don't think Holly is "into it" though (do write in and prove me wrong if you read this, Hol!). I just think she is a very good live TV presenter who is up for a laugh. Shocking waste if she disappears from our screen (though my guess is she's having a baby right now).
Of course, Tiswas was a far better show. But it was usually the guests (Pans People, the Nolans, Toyah, Annie Lennox etc) who were the best victims. Sally was an icon (or should it be Pie-con?) cos she was first. Had Ministry of Mayhem had better gunge (though it is hard to throw thick gunge!) it would be WAM collectors item stuff. Even now with no MoM, no Dick and Dom and no possibility of Saturday slapstick on the horizon (this is where Bill starts ranting!), I think those who recorded those Thank You desk routines, some of the more violent "cakings" on Cakey Sk8 and her dancing wet and messy to the theme tune will, with the benefit of hindsight, say they were good stuff.

PS As you may gather I'm in another bloody hotel. Sober. Alone and suffering severe WAM deprivation!

I've heard that Sally didn't really enjoy getting WAMed. Any truth to this rumour?

that word sounds so silly "WAMmed" ... literally meaning she didnt like getting "wet and messy'ed"
hehe... yeah, i heard she got stingy eyes, and she didnt like how her hair was always getting ruined. so i suppose she did have her complaints as regards being sploshed!
me... i think i'd go for Holly. Not just because the only Tiswas i've seen is on tapes or repeats on TV... but 'cos , like Hayley said, Holly is a massive trooper.
She's also engaged to be married to a producer of the show, who is likely to be a big splosher i think...
yeah, im drunk... gonna go sit in the bath

Lucky you, Dolly!
Bill (who has interviewed Sal a couple of times) tells me that she only really did it cos she had to. You get the feeling with Holly that she was happy to get wet and messy, knew guys liked it and that it looked good (she was a model after all). Get the impression she had her limits though. When they had the smelly food fight at the start of the show for a while, she often kept away from that.

Hi Hayley (and all)...
I think maybe Sally's problems related to Tiswas being very much a 'lads show' ... we're all a bunch of immature lads going nuts, kind of thing. Holly seems much more on an even keel with her male co-presenters ... like they're all mates together.
In that famous 'viewers request' Tiswas scene, Chris Tarrant has a note of malicious dislike in his joyous gunging of Sally.
Hayley - I'm sure I can think of at least 3 really good 'real food' gungings of Sally (though I was only a young teenager and I'm sure my memories aren't that accurate). I certainly remember real food being used to gunge others besides Sally quite a lot (including rice pudding, milk, ketchup, chocolate etc).
I also find Holly more attractive than (the young) Sally.
So ... whilst I prefer Tiswas as a show, I have to say I think Holly is the new first lady of TV WAM (but as you say - Sally was the first first lady!).

ps - it was Legs and Co - not Pans People

I grew up on Tiswas and have to say it would have been nice to see Sally James getting sploshed (best use the right term!!?) more often, and yes she did seem to run away from the mess regually.
Holly seems to be more up for it though, maybe she enjoys it more, or maybe it was just in her contract that she had to do, we'll never know!!!!
regards
Andy

My my, showing your age! As those of us who are "down with the kids" (LOL) know...Holly is Holly Willoughby who co-presented a Sat morning kids show called Ministry of Mayhem (which had various messy elements including one where she playued a 'maid' called Polly with the Trolley). It later morphed (badly) into Holly & Stephen's Saturday Showdown.
Will upload a pic later...
