Fake oil?

A long time fantasy of mine has been using some used motor oil. Obviously this is not safe. Does anyone have recommendations for something that would be similar in look and texture?

Treacle, chocolate syrup that's been watered down a tad or thin batter that's dyed dark brown or black.

We were involved in an "art Installation" a while back where they wanted to fill a 15' pool with oil. We used black gunge but just put plenty of black poster paint in and it seemed to work really well.
