Anyone remember the old TV show "How"? The original not the remake.

I recall one show where they made showed how to make clown pies. As I recall they used washing powder and water!!!

Then all the presenters got messy. Would love to see the clip.

I recall the prog.

Which era of How was that? I certainly don't recommend washing powder, though Lux flakes were pure soap which some clowns used whipped up like the shaving soap sticks Clown Julie has tried.

Crackerjack had many, many messy sketches with Peter Glaze (who had been a stand-in for one of the Crazy Gang) and Leslie Crowther, then later with Don MacLean (not the singer!) and the fabulous Jan Hunt. Even Michael Aspel regularly took part back in the early 70s (I remember the Radio Times article when he took over as presenter with the headline "There's a Lot More Slapstick in Me Than You Might Imagine")!

Can go on about this stuff for ages if required!!!

One of my earliest Wam memories was of crackerjack and seeing Sarah Greene get covered with "shampoo" in the gunge tank thingy they had. The best bit was it should have been the other person who got gunged, so she really wasnt expecting it!

Ahh the memories....

That was even later in the Stu Francis era. Mid 1980s, I'd say. Had that clip on VHS for ages. Edited version here.

My memories of Crackerjack had Eamon Andrews (?) (the chap who did This Is Your Life) and Mr Patry - Richard Hearne. Might have been aroiund the time that Peter Glaze joined the show.

Mr Pastry was on at least twice, showing how to make custard pies, he used flour and water, which I remember trying myself at home, using newspaper as the base because I didn't have access as a young teenage boy, to paper plates.

I remember getting the flour and water mix in my hair, eyebrows and ears and it drying hard, and trying to get it out before my mother saw it and demanded explanations.

Eamon used to get a pie in the face at the end of the shows with Mr Pastry, as he was "winding up" the programme.

Goodness knows how long it took Mr Pastry to get cleaned up - he always ended up completely covered.

Probably my introduction to sploshing.....

First of all...my favourite of the Take a Chance gungings from Crackerjack.



Secondly, just old enough to remember Mr Pastry. As you say, a lot of flour and water, and definitely hard work to remove. Various remedies for flour clogged hair have been suggested here over the years including peanut butter! Oily substances definitely help get rid of it or limit the damage beforehand.

The date on the first compilation shows 1983 so that proves your memory fairly accurate! Id have been 7 - so had been into wam for years by then!!

Crackerjack was watched when I used to go round my grandparents for tea whatever day it was on. I also remember another show around the same time, maybe earlier where a dude (have no idea who) got something yucky dumped on his suit shoulder from a bucket by a gorgeous blonde and she then got double pied by I think 2 kids running on with them. This was at the end of the show - possibly a series end I dont know. Have no clue of the show and havent seen it since but that was the first good pieing I remember seeing!

I remember watching that Sara Hollamby gunging where Stu Francis pulls her in. There must be a fair few Crackerjack gungings from that era which haven't made it to the web yet. Good to see Sarah Greene getting it: it makes up for Comic Relief's dismal attempt.

I used to have all the female ones on VHS (I'd just got it!) but the guy who put the Youtube version of Sara Hollamby up seems to have most of the others. They are mainly sportswomen in trackies though. Had a bit of a crush on the young Fern Britton!

My best Crackerjack memory is when Leslie Crowther was playing a grand paino (very well) and Peter Glaze walked past pushng a trolly of pies and flour etc.
While Leslie kept playing Peter covered him in everything even ripping his shirt open.
When Leslie stopped playing he turned to Peter and said, "Yes Peter, did you want something?

Amazing stuff.
And was there a quiz at the end when the kids won prizes but had to hold them all. If they dropped one then they were out?

Did Sharron Davies ever get gunged on Crackerjack?

In the 80s I used to fantasise about her getting a gunging. She was a regular guest on lots of TV shows at the time but I can't remember her ever being involved in slapstick.
