Arrgghh!! Sorry DD. A bit of an ageist dig at two of the UK's unfunniest comics EVER. I like to try and think that there aren't people younger than me - unfortunately there are - loads of them!!

The only duo I can think of to rival Little and Large in general unfunniness is the duo they went head to head with on ITV - Cannon and Ball. Jim Bowen's character in Phoenix Nights said he'd booked Cannon and Ball when they were funny, to which Peter Kay responds, Christ, that's going back a bit. I can't believe such a time existed at all, certainly not having seen their original "New Faces" turn on cable TV re-runs.

Point taken anyway.. maybe we should reign in these threads a little before we start dredging up The Good Life and My Hero, or maybe combine the theme into one big thread instead. The Blackadder one was fun, but these things have an irritating danger of taking over - witness the endless parade of interminable "100 Best Vasectomy Recipients In Television" type shows that have choked up Channel 4 for the past decade.

I do recall they used to be on the BBC on Saturday Nights for years, I think I watched it after Doctor Who had finished, probably Tom Baker in those days! I remember Syd always tried to sing and Eddie did an awful Cliff Richard impression.

Though I think we should have a tribute with Julie and DD as Little and Large, mainly boobage size though maybe that should be Large and Larger! Hope I don't brew up a storm in a Dcup being cheeky LOL!

But I like a nice pair, and both DD and Julie do!

Oooh best rentaghost moment was whenever dobbin the pantomime horse sneezed with Miss Popoff and drove the big american convertible car.

Tend to agree about the comedy threads especially as I am not a big Father Ted fan (it had its good bits but only makes the classic clip shows cos they are produced by Channel 4). Unless of course somebody starts comedy threads about shows with some slapstick in them!

I always felt rather sorry for L&L. They were universally slated but no worse than many of the other variety acts around at that time (anyone else remember Chees & Onion?). I did like The Guardian's review that described Sid Little as "delivering his lines with all the panache of a man who can't quite read the autocue."

And Cannon & Ball did revive some old Charlie Drake knockabout sketches for their pantos which might have died otherwise...*

* Mind you that was when they both got God, Bobby stopped shagging everything that moved and they weren't even remotely funny any more. OK not funny. Popular. Stupidly popular. They were HUGE at one time.

PS Regarding the Peter Kay story, this happened for real. I interviewed Bernard Manning on the phone some years back and he loved name-dropping about people who had played his club as in "I booked The Beatles - five quid each they were in them days. I booked them all - even Cannon & Ball but I paid them off after three days cos they were shite."

I remember Little and Large very well from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s. They made their debut on the New Faces talent show around 1976 I think and went on to get their own TV show. They used to do good take offs of Laurel and Hardy as well. They were a brilliant double act with Eddie Large acting as the funny man and Sid Little as the straight man whom Large was always taking the piss out of.

My favourite funniest moment was when Bobby called Sid ' Supersonic ' only to receive a dead-pan expression in return.

Or was it, instead, when Eddie always used to twang his braces and get a big laugh when he loudly shouted ' Rock On Tommy ' .
I once used the ' Rock On Tommy ' catchphrase in very poor taste on a Scout camp once in the Peak district after a minor landslide caused a few large stones to fly up and strike a fellow member of my troop. Except that his name was indeed Timmy.

Since comedy nerdism seems to be in fashion, can I point out Little and Large were on Opportunity Knocks not New Faces (nearly typed Faeces there - a freudian slip since the show gave the world Jim Davidson)?

Oh and whilst I'm being nerdish, I'll get this in before Bill does, Rentaghost was written by Bob Block who wrote for Crackerjack in its slapstick heyday (which also had Little and Large as hosts much later). Rentaghost did at least have some mess in it...though it was usually Mr Meaker who got it.
