Just got back from my transpennine trek over to Warrington, great to meet you all! There was a fella early on who was looking around with a map in his hand, but on passing me and Andy sat at a table with our Morecambe OS map prominently displayed he carried on by and left, so either a) he was looking for someone else, b) he was looking for the meet but on seeing the two of us gave it up as a bad idea, or c) he completely failed to notice our map on the table (we didn't feel it appropriate to speak up at that point in case of a) ).

Soon after though Claymore and DD arrived, followed by a few others who I'll leave to Clay to list, because I'll only get it wrong if I attempt to remember their screennames. A drunk guy came over to the table late on in the proceedings and wouldn't go away, when Jonny had settled down (sorry, Jonny, couldn't resist! ) another guy came to bum a light and started spouting drunken religious crap at us until we finally managed to persuade him to naff off.

In all we had seven folks in attendance (not counting the drunk or the mystery man), had a lovely natter and a fine time was had by all. The meet was definitely a big success, laying the ground for what will hopefully be more meets in 2007 and it was terrific to be able to put faces to names. Many thanks to Clay for organising this, and to everyone who showed up - look forward to seeing you again soon!

hello, everybody, Warrington was a good sucess for a first time attempt, thanks to Claymore for picking up DD. It was nice to meet Johnny after chatting for so long on msn etc, Muckypup popped in among other people.

Helen made me laugh as usual drinking tea in a pub, cup, saucer and tea pot the lot.

Was nice to have a chat to DD and I am hoping we can get together next year for a couple of days for some filming, thats all along way off though.

Bill sent a text to us all, while we were chatting thanks Bill that was really kind of you. Hope you are getting over your hangover.

For once I didn't drink I had to come back and do a bit of work with Luna photos etc.

I really do hope we have some more meets next year, next time I would stay over and take everybody on the piss. Apart from Miss Helen who has give up drinking!!!! mobile tea pot required.

Again I spent most of the time laughing, I really enjoyed meeting everyone and already hoping their will be another meet.

Thanks to all for the effort.

Well done Helen! You beat me to it there - that was fast!

A splendid time was had all round, I think. The attendance was:

and, as Miss Helen said, a couple of drunks trying to cadge a light. (Actually, I think he was an anti-religion bloke but when I tell you that he pulled a 1 foot-long gas cooker lighter from his jacket to try to light a cigar that he'd still not unwrapped from its cellophane, you'll appreciate that his powers of communication were .... somewhat 'limited'! Good comedy value though!)

I'm hoping that the person you spotted with the OS map wasn't looking for us and had missed out, though it would be a bit of a coincidence for someone else to be wandering round a particular pub with an OS map! (I must admit that I didn't spot your map at first when we came in as it looked like part of the menu display, being hooked over it - but 10/10 for the display idea!)

DD's flight had been a bit delayed and, when we got back to the car, I realised I'd forgotten to pay at the machines in the terminal building and had to go back (doh!) so we were a bit later than planned but 'hey' as they say in the States.

I'm still amazed that Jonny drove all the way from Cornwall - there's dedication for you! He and DD will, by now, be in the hotel bar, assuming that they managed to find their way back to it. (When I left them, they were busy getting their bearings again in the town centre and trying to work out which way they should be heading! Warrington's one way and pedestrianised bits are probably as confusing as any other town's.)

The conversation was wide-ranging, including music, comedy and, of course, all varieties of sploshing! The OS maps were perused in order to exchange information on good sploshing locations for mud, which was handy.

The food there wasn't up to much (typical large-chain pub) and Slap Stick Slosh suggested one for next time that he used to frequent just by Central Station. (SSS - I looked on my way back to the car park. The only one I could see there was the King's Head, opposite, unless you meant the one on the roundabout at the junction of Pinner's Brow/Winwick Road/Winwick Street, the name of which I have now forgotten having glanced at it as I drove out? I couldn't see any pubs on the same side as the station.)

The timing seemed generally good. The pub wasn't too crowded and the music level was lowish. By about 8, they'd faded the lights down and then a bit later on the music level was suddenly boosted substantially, making it difficult to talk at all so we used that as our cue to leave, having spent several happy hours in there. In that respect, I think it was much more successful than if we'd tried to do it in the evening which would have been more like torture if trying to converse. (Apart from which, none of us would have made it there!)

All in all a great afternoon's entertainment! Using Area No 2's regular calendar, the next one should come along on the 3rd Saturday afternoon in January (20th, I think). Think ahead for your diaries now!

Sounds like a very typical Saturday afternoon in the pub. There are always all-day drinkers in those chain pubs cos they are so cheap. You should see Wetherspoons in Hastings on a Sat pm - scary!

Wish I'd been there, but even if I had I would have had to go early to get back to Sheffield where I was meant to be staying. Sorry I missed The Doll, Miss Helen in drab, Andy not in his pyjamas, Claymore (though we would have bored everyone about buses), Muckypup, Slapstickslosh and Jonny the Poodle. Your chance to be bored rigid by 18 years of Splosh anecdotes will come!

Tea is a fine drink but not in pubs - it takes up too much room! If MissHelen ever gets to St Lens I shall take her to the Royal Victoria, an afternoon tea place if ever there was. And there's a grand piano there as well.

Incidentally, it rained non-stop here. Big thumderstorms etc. Laura would have been in her element (literally).

Will try to make it in Jan!

Well, Warrington was fun- it will be forever remembered as

1. the drunken fool with the lighter!
2. Helen's Teapot!
3. My complete inability to find the Travel Inn
4. Dolly's Snoring and smelly feet.
5. The lovely Subway besides the skittles in the main court...

I'm aiming to setup a South West meet so i dont have to travel too far next time!

Dolly kept her tights on and didnt sleep...so smelly feet and snoring would be nigh on impossible.

sounds like a great meet everyone, i've just got back from up north (yes, further north) and it looks like i missed out on a great day.

Bearing in mind that DD had flown in a nice plane whilst Jonny drove all the way up from Cornwall, I reckon he is more likely to be guilty of the cheesy feet problem. But I would say that.

Sounds great as I said before, and the pub by the station sounds better than Yates (if your Yates is like the one in Hastings - and they generally are).

Just to emphasise the previous comments a good time was had at Warrington on Sat made even better by the thoughtful provision by Claymore 'at table' entertainment. The actor played the drunk almost to perfection complete with cigar and comedy lighter. Perfection would have been the presence of a soda syphon complete with contents.

It's always nice to put faces to screen names and this meeting was no exception. Talking of faces I surpassed myself and resisted the temptation to decorate Helen's face with the apple crumble and ice-cream. It seemed to be borderline edible but otherwise useable!

The pub I was thinking of is the one on the roundabout. As Ilovepies mentioned in 'another place' its called The Lord Rodney. On reflection, although I've visited it a few times some years back for Friday lunchtime drinks and its not bad, Saturday afternoons might be another matter. If I've got my bearings right its not far from Warrington Stadium and might get a bit rowdy on match days.

However, all is not lost, there are some nice pubs at the back of Yates if memory serves. I feel the urge to visit some licensed premises in Warrington one Saturday afternoon - purely for research purposes and old times sake you understand!
