Whats good to use to make a mud bath??

Postby muddywildfire » 15 Oct 2006, 18:18

Hi All

With winter approaching (well supposedly!?)I am contemplating with the idea of making a mud bath at home  .
I realise powdered clay is good for this but am not sure where to get it from?? Also how can you dispose of the mud afterwards?? will it wash away?? :?
Any help or past experiences greatly received

clay could actully be a problem, i used to do mine in the basement and after a few pump outs through the drani etc i found that the clay although 100% diluted still formed a silt in the ubends etc
so maybe over a period of time it could build up, also a bath tub is only so big, to have any fun you will need to fill it half wayish with clay
leaving a thicker mass to get rid of
i should think it will all go and be washed away but it might build up over time

once the clay settles for a little bit it starts to build up

in london uk i get my clay from "cerematec"? or used to, they are in north london and a clay supplier , i think in or off Queen street, edmonton / tottenham.

pure bought clay is good and cheap from such places, sure beats trying to get it home from the side of road works then sifting the stones out, but thats another messy adventure

mind you if you aint doing the mud bath actully in the household bath then you dont got to worry about washing it away at all, i kept my clay around for ages, till i needed the space

If you try and wash anything muddy down the plug hole you are asking for some sort of build up.

Powdered clay is definitely the best bet, I reckon, and should be avaiilable in big craft shops and listed in Yellow Pages under Pottery Supplies (Good old Yellow Pages). We get ours from the Clay Centre near Tunbridge Wells.

Beware the red one can tint bleached hair! Though not permanently.

Yes clay is the way to go, I feel. If you're going to be using a quantity of it, bear in mind that it has very high mass. A bath full of it will probably weigh getting on for a tonne so bear that in mind for your floor loadings!

I dread to think what a quantity like that would do to your drains. I do allow some to go down the drain but only a very small quantity and very dilute while I'm changing out of my clothes and washing off any residue, as I only mix up about half a bucketful (since it's so dense that I find this enough to get reasonable coverage) and I scrape as much as I can back into the bucket for re-use again.

The other problem is that it can go 'off' with bacteria growing in it. (You won't believe the pong even half a bucket can make, let alone a bathtub!)

You're actually very well placed to get yours from PotClays who are based around Stoke.

I've got useful info and links on my website about pouring clay into tights and there's purchasing, mixing and utilisation info in that article. (See link below).

Hope this helps.
