Curious Art Student

Hey all

Im a second year art student in London currently looking at different ways of expressing yourself!
Ive done performance art, normal art, sculpting etc. Ive heard about splosh before and wondered if anyone considers it an art form / way of expressing themself or just plain dirty fun!

Love to have a chat with a few people over email / message if interested! And of course i might be talked into trying it as I have with all other art forms!

This got discussed in the Sunday Times many years ago pre-internet leading to Brian Sewell condemning Splosh! as just "a wretched magazine"!

Whilst I doubt many sploshers do it for the sake of art, many artists have used sploshing techniques. Happy to discuss it further if you email me at bill@splosh.co.uk

Ah the old question of what is art? - I have been involved with a number of art projects and I can tell you that art can take almost any form and is an outward expression of yourself (wow that is deep for this sort of forum!)

You could see Sploshing as an extension of performance art and done well could be very powerful, entertaining and interesting - you will certainly get your audience discussing it!

I think that it can be artistic. Some of the pictures messy-online do I find very arty and beautiful. I myself find it a form of self expression. Most of the time it is fun, but sometimes when you think about the colours and textures of the slime and clothing all contrasting it can create a pretty picture!

I have always been artistically inclined so I am bound to see the beauty in it.

Do *you* consider it a form of expression? Without trying to sound like a pretentious twat, I think any sexual act is a form of self-expression. If you want to give it a go, for whatever reason, do it.

I often use paint or bodypaint, either as a cover before sploshing or as the main event. Paint users are in the minority but I reckon we are proper performance artists, especially if we film it and can take vidcaps. (or maybe just pretentious and self justifying!) good luck with the degree!

Bear with me :

I’ve been through an 'art education' and practice as a conventional artist under my own name and, more recently, have begun as a fetish illustrator under the name I use on this forum (for mostly my own amusement).

The trouble is that the ‘art world’, as you will no doubt be experiencing, is very much situated in the ‘moral’ left. In most cases this is a good thing, in terms of pushing boundaries and liberalism, but it tends to disapprove of anything that smacks of pleasure or titillation of any kind, especially that which might allude to the ‘male gaze’. This critically is thought to undermine any ‘intellectual’ message, especially if the maker is a man. Of course, within this moral slant (within feminist discourse) as a woman, you are permitted to explore this in relation to your femininity.

‘Fetish’, of course, has become more palatable to the popular consciousness as in recent years and accepted critically within the context of ‘outsider’ art or simply exploring the ‘counter-culture’.

For me as seeing women getting wet and messy has been my life-long sexual fetish, (and for most of it, a secret one) and it turns me on, when I was younger I struggled to reconcile it with my ‘intellectual’ side (and therefore I was easily cowed into suppressing it). Now, I’m older, just accept it for what it is and enjoy and revel in it!

The ‘art’ is exploring intellectually, your personal relationship with it. If your interest is genuine and curious, it will tend to come good.

As writer Matthew Collings once said:

Well I think yours are very good (especially the second one) but I know so little about art I don't even know what I like!

We provided the gunge for an event at the Barbican recently where a someone was lowered into 4000 litres of black gunge. Whilst it wasn't a "splosh" type of event and a definate art event, it could be seen as a way of the artist expressing himself with the gunge.

Lady GaGa used a gunge tank during her performance on the Graham Norton show last night - so maybe she would be worth asking that question?

I'm surprised no one else has posted on this - unless I just dreamt that I saw her step in to the tank with her dancers and then writhe about in the slime with them? Being one of GaGa's dancers? - Got to be a tough job that...
