Like I said before, by the end of this year there will be no celebs left. Mollie Sugden was a great comedy actress. I remember her in The Liver Birds before her famous role as Mrs Slocombe. Who next? Perhaps we should have a sweepstake?

2 of the big names from the Carry On era who are still well, alive and kicking are Leslie Phillips and Barbara Windsor. It will be a very sad day indeed when we lose celebs like these as they represent the peak of the carry on/slapstick era in the UK.

The next person has just died (the 4th person) is Karl Malden. Best known drama TV series, The Streets of San Francisco in the 1970's.
I love ladies dress up in smart business knee length skirt suits with sleeved blouse and full underwear to get messy and wet.

Hope it's not Leslie Phillips next, I still have fond memories of him jumping in the hydrotherapy pool with Joan Sims (who has died sadly) in her nursing sister's uniform!

Sorry to hear about her passing. I remember watching her on Are You Being Served and It's follow up series.
She was a very funny woman and will be remembered.

I was listening to Prince after MJ died, and I suddenly thought, 'Shit, Prince is going to die too and then I will actually cry.' So I'm not going to play this game or I'll feel really bad if anyone else dies!
Its always sad when someone from British comedy dies. You don't really realise how important comedy is to our landscape most of the time.

Funnily enough the Daily Sport had something like that the other day...

Oh, and a quick mention of Colin Bean who died a couple of weeks ago. Who? He played Private Sponge in Dad's Army and was in the 2nd row of Jones' platoon. He mostly stayed silent but was occasionally asked to fetch things by Capt Mainwaring and got to say, "Yes, Capt Mainwaring." By the final series when Walker had died and the unamusing Welsh photographer was in the front row, he sometimes got two or three lines. But he was in every Dad's Army from the start to the very finish and never gets a mention in any of the retro shows. So RIP Private Sponge

I saw the BBC report about Colin Bean. It's strange when all the things you grew up with are changing, passing on, or being replaced. I supose things like Dad's Army were very much products of their era, aimed at people who had first hand memories of the war, or knew people who did. Strange to think how much the world has changed in the last 30 years. RIP indeed!

The first series of Dads Army wasn't very popular because people either didn't remember the war, and those that did thought it was disrespectful. It took time for people to realise that it was just a mix of character comedy, catchphrases and slapstick performed by excellent actors who went on to breathe life into the characters.

Hi, I don't really remember seeing Are You Being Served on T.V. , our family used to watch it but I was only young.
Also I didn't remember Dads Army first time round but have seen it on re-runs since, and I could watch it all day and still find it funny.
I like a lot of the old comedy series, especially before all this political correctness rubbish stopped things being funny, I love things like Open All Hours, The two Ronnies, Monty Python, On The Buses, I also remember Sid James in (I think) Bless this House, although that was a while ago.
I used to watch carry on films at my Grandma's house on saturday afternoons, with Dad's army on at teatime before I went home. I wish those days of carefree times were still around, as well as my grandma. She wasn't your typical old lady type grandma, she had a sense of humour that would make a soldier blush, and one of her favourite programmes used to be Euro-Trash on a Saturday Night
I wonder if any of the so-called comedians of today will still be remembered in 30 years, or will we still be laughing at sitcoms of yesteryear on about their 500th airing on T.V.
As has been said on this topic before, there can't be many left now of the classic comedy age on T.V., or for that matter the radio either. I used to listen to the Goon Show on BBC 7 digital radio, but they have stopped airing them at the moment, they were so funny and an inspiration to many others.
R.I.P. the classic comedy.

We'll have to drink our way out of this
Re: off topic. R I P Mrs. Slocomb
There is another classic comedy star who is still alive. I don't think he was in carry on going off biographies but is of the same era and of the same ilk.
Sir Norman Wisdom.
Mid 90's now and although still with us has lost his memory.
15 years ago he was in a local shopping centre local to me and gave the shoppers an impromptu show, very funny, even without Mr Grimsdale.
I'm sure there were many a slapstick scene in his films. From the time when the British Film Industry and Rank were still doing well.
Interesting topic about the changing nature of comedy. Simply don't watch the new stuff, the classics always get my attention though when cable surfing.
Was a sad day when Reg Varney went, now it seems we are losing these comedy greats monthly. Very sad time now to see this era of comedy greats slowly disappear.
