Football help needed (sort of off-topic)

Postby wampony » 19 Apr 2009, 12:09

Hi,
I have been asked by a new female friend of mine if I could get messy in a football shirt, but when I asked her which one she wasn't sure which team's shirt to choose.
Well I know bugger all about football but decided to do the following- which ever team gets relegated from the premier division is the shirt I will wear (got the idea after hearing certain teams are in danger of relegation on the news).

Now for your help- when does the football season finish, and what teams are in danger of being relegated, and how do I know which have the least points?

One good thing is that because I don't have much money the shirt I will wear doesn't have to be from this season, any will do providing it is from the team with the least points.

And if the pics come out allright I will put some on here.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
We'll have to drink our way out of this

You can find the table at http://www.premierleague.com/page/Leagu ... 06,00.html and I think the last games are 24th May.

It looks as if WBA will definitely go down, then its down to about another 4 or 5 teams for the last few places, the bottom of the table looks like this:

Sunderland
Hull City
Blackburn
Middlesbrough
Newcastle
WBA

West Bromich Albion.

I think this is a certainty they will finish the bottomest of the pile this season . . . so if you think you'll look dapper in dark/navy blue and white vertical stripes this is the kit for you. In addition, should you like the adornment of a badge, the club crest is a picture of a throstle sitting on a hawthorn branch ( originally a crossbar from the goalposts ) although now even the branch has disappeared in the new copyrighted design. The blue and white striped shield remains as the background. The club's ground is called The Hawthorns, so called because the area had to be cleared of hawthorn bushes to bulid the stadium, hence its inclusion on the badge.

To avoid me making an in-joke, for those of a football persuasion, reference ( which is ultimately what all this blurb is about, in honesty ) to buying an oversized shirt or even suggesting that all the goo might stretch the material beyond its natural bounds and render it permanently shapeless . . . . West Bromich Albion are popularly nicknamed The Baggies. Good, I think that danger has now passed !
It is uncertain how the name was acquired but it has been in existence for a hundred years or so, and was disliked by the club itself who preferred the other nickname of the time The Throstles. Throstle being another name for a thrush. I am sure being called The Thrushes, if you like, was much, much better . . .
The term 'Baggies' may have been bestowed upon WBA by the local rival Aston Villa fans because of the baggy trousers worn by their supporters, they were part of the work clothes fron the ironworkers of the town.

I hope this has helped you get into some Jam . . . . and if nothing else, " I say, that's INFO-TAINMENT ! That's INFO-TAINMENT . . . . "

Excellent, thanks for your replies.
I didn't realise that the end of the season is still about 6 weeks or so away, but it gives me time to keep checking, and to try to get the necessary shirt, to be honest had never heard of west Bromwich Albion before ( I told you I know bugger all about football), I know I messed a Leeds shirt a while ago but it was one someone gave me as it was too small for them, and they told me what shirt it was.

I will put some pics on here after the event, so keep watching.

As a Frank Skinner fan, I feel sorry for West Brpm. Then again as an ex-Birmingham resident, I see the Blues may be on the way back up.

I hate football but I can't let this West Midlands 'war zone' pass without giving a shout for Wolves who (apparently) have just got promoted to the Premier League. (I was born in Wolverhampton and grew up during the time when Billy Wright was England captain and we supplied half the England team!).

West Brom indeed are still bottom . . . . . but Newcastle United are making a late bid for the ignomy of being a big club finishing in 20th out of twenty !

So, who knows you might be able to get a Toon shirt instead. As far as nicknames go it is more appropriate since they are also known as those birds that can't resist shiny objects . . . .

. . . you could end up being Mag - PIED !!!!!!

With no disrespect whatsoever to our quiet man in the North East I had to smile at an apparent quote from Alan Shearer, the Toon's current manager, when he allegedly said

" Beating Liverpool at the weekend will ease our relegation worries a bit. " !!!!!!!!!

Note I put my exclamation marks after the quote, coz I can't imagine Shearer said it with anything other than a straight face . . . I mean that's balls of steel if he thinks he'll get a point let alone three from that game !

Hi, from what I can understand from the tables it looks like West Bromwich Albion have finished bottom, am I right in thinking that the games yesterday were the last of the current season?
