I think it is so much better when there is someone else in shot handing out the messing. Firstly the victim has no control of what happens to her/him - (unlike self messing); and secondly there is that sense of anticipation and uncertainty as to what is going to happen next.

And anyway why should Charlie miss out on the fun and fame!!!

I agree entirely, it's so much better seeing your assailant deliver the gunge. Watching the set up for the gag is almost as much fun, it's about the anticipation, your's and the audiences !
