Did "Tommy" invent sploshing?

I saw a post on a blog where someone claimed that the Ann Margret messy Tommy scene started the sploshing phenomenon. I also saw someone say that scene was equivalent to a WAM video fro Messy Fun etc. What does everyone think?

It's bollocks! There were plenty of messy scenes before Tommy.

PS Who are Messy Fun????

The only possible justification for that claim is that the scene might have been the first mainstream film where a girl got messy just for the sheer enjoyment of it, rather than a comic element.

Messy comedy in films goes back to the 1920's, of course, and there was lots of slapstick comedy on UK TV in the 50's and 60's.

Tommy - 1975. The Great Race - 1965. I rest my case.

Bill, is this the onset of Alzheimer's? Messy Fun was the label of Rob Blaine, who you've met. Put that on the 'fame' thread.

Mike.

Messy flims have been around since the silent film era of the 1920s.

I have not got Alzheimers, nor have I sold 60 million books like Terry Pratchett. I may have lost my hair, a few teeth and most of my decorum but my sense of humour is intact. It was a fucking joke (based on a certain forum always implying MF were the originators of commercial messiness).

  Sorry, I didn't know that was a joke; I'm not a member of 'a certain forum' - due to some screw-up when I tried to join, they reckon they now have a member with my e-mail address, and all my requests to them to help sort it out have been completely ignored. There's customer service for you.

At least one gets an answer from Bill. :)

Mike.

I had exactly that same problem with "a certain forum"....after they'd also chucked me off their chatroom, saying that I was using two names (which I wasn't!).
So I don't buy anything from their advertisers...support the Brits instead.

Yes thanks Bill, her Hayleyship came up with the goods. I've sent pm's to both of them and am awaiting replies with baited (but not held) breath.

The only downside to not being on UMD is that I seem to miss out on some of the jokes.
