Viz / Bill Shipton

Hi Bill

I remember on one of the occasions I had a beer with you, you mentioned you'd made occasional appearances in Viz - in cartoon character form.

I've forgotten most of what you told me, and wondered if you could tell me again.

Did you appear as Bill Shipton? Or did they give you a character name? Did the character look anything like you?

I don't suppose you've got any of the Viz's you appeared in ... it would be great if you could scan and print a few pics. Or has anyone else got Viz back issues with Bill in?

My Viz claim to fame is having my letter printed in 'Letter Bocks' about two years ago.

I'm sure their was one of Bill in viz and their was another that was in splosh mag, where he played the evil Phantom, I'm sure it was Denise who got somebody to do, but can't remember which mag she worked for.

Most likely Bill will have the answers.

Think I've mentioned this beffore on another thread, so sorry for repeating it if I have.

It is an established fact (it even makes it in the talk they give to art colleges) that they use me whenever they want to depict a seedy, perverted, pornographic, single man who wanks a lot and writes to/for tit mags or makes videos. The character is usually called Bill Shipton or Mr Shipton and has appeared in several different strips including the Fat Slags (who have also bought a copy of Splosh! in the past). Amongst "my" exploits have been writing letters to Razzle, making anal sex films, running Shipton's Pocket Fannies vibrator factory, owning a porn video shop and numerous dirty old men.

Rather than be insulted by this, I am deeply honoured. When I went to Viz's 25th birthday party recently (at the very snobby Cafe de Paris incidentally), I was welcomed into their VIP area and chatted with the three 'bosses' of Viz from the different era (Chris Donald, then Simon Donald, now Graham Dury) as well as the various cartoonists who treated me very much as one of them - even though they are far more successful than I am. Had a great time. They told me that I was indeed a running gag in the mag (as I'd suspected) and they they mention me in their talk to students. Simon Donald claimed I was a "God" but that was only cos I used to write for Razzle!

Since then they have kindly hand illustrated copies of their books on Viz and are still great fans of Splosh! I must tell them about the forum!

The ego will now subside...

I don't think being the resident pervert character in a comic counts as 'talent'!

I think it's a cool claim to fame. Any clippings you can scan for us Bill?
