Has everybody taken theres down yet? Just asking coz this bloke across the road from me still has his tree up, same last year took it down mid feb! Ill see how long he leaves it this year lazy twat lol.

I don't understand Xmas decorations, what a waste of money !

What is there to celebrate anyway? Just because some bloke was around a couple of thousand years ago and since then millions of people have been slaughtered in wars about whether or not he was related to some mythical god!

Bear in mind that Midwinter feasting goes back long before anyone had ever heard of Jesus of Nazareth or the middle-eastern tribal deity of the Jews. I'm probably biased, being neo-Pagan, but celebrating a big feast in the depths of winter, and marking the passing of the longest night of the year (Dec 21st, usually), does make sense to me. It's a way for people to remember that there are warmer and brighter days ahead (and that the outdoor mud sploshing season isn't that far away! ).

Then again, the god worshiped at Xmas now is Santa Claus, great god of money and commerce, who's millions of devoted believers gather at the great marble-finished temples they have built, and keep the faith with the Lesser Ritual of the Debit Card and the Greater Ritual of the Credit Card.

(cue massive religious flame-war, which will distract everyone else while I steal all the gunge... )

Haha your neighbours not as lazy as me if he was he wouldn't of bothered putting them up in the first place i actually got my tree out of the attic though this year and donated it to my sister as it had remained un-disturbed in my attic for 4 years lol

When the kids were young, I did the full Christmas decky thing, but now I just put the cards on display (both of them).

I got invited to my first Solstice Party this year so I fully understand the midwinter festival idea. I think one needs something around that time to cheer everyone up. Where I am a misery is that I don't do overeating! Drinking maybe, but not food. I never have liked huge meals - except over me, of course!

Their is a house in Shackerely that just does not bother to take them down, their up their all year. They just dont turn them. That said their is no tree outside. Just all the neon lights and neon father xmas on a slay, maked me laugh everytime I go past.

Worse thing about Christmas is the three months hype beforehand...the general idea this year (again) seemed to be that the more money you spent, the happier you'd be. Judging by the way people were wandering around, looking bored, by the 27th, I don't think that it worked!

(No, my name's not Scrooge...I always enjoy the three days break, but, like a lot of my mates, we'd rather get back to work than kick-our-heels for ten days, then take the time off later in the year when there's more to do.)
