Having enjoyed mud wallowing for many years i can tell you that the answer is quite easy and all in the timing. Wallow when the tide is low and enjoy the mud while the tide comes in. Might mean resting in the mud for a while (that is a good feeling on a warm day) and as soon as you can get in the sea/river, have a good splash around, dunk and swim in it. Most of the mud washes out (sadly) and then you are just in soaking wet clothes. Oh yes, another big turn on! Clean is a relative term here, but the worst (or best) of the mud has washed away. If you really want to get out of the wet and still slightly mucky clothes, make sure your hair, face and hands are clean, by washing in the sea/river and then change into some old baggy clothes, like an old track suit/jogging clothes. The problem then is you want to go back into the mud and river and get them all messy and wet but resist the temptation and head for a good shower. Hope that this helps!
For me nothing beats the feeling of wading into mud in an old comfortable pair of jeans, or baggy, black jogging bottoms, a tee and sweatshirt, knowing that I am going to end up totally covered and eventually soaked.
Enjoy the mud meet, wish that I could join you.

The boat idea is a good one. If you can find an excuse for getting messy no one takes much notice of you, like you say they just think that you are a rubbish sailor. A while ago I had a canoe and was always falling out of it or running aground on muddy banks. Could spend the whole afternoon wet and muddy with a perfectly good reason why!

I always make sure their is a pond nearby or take bottled water with me its the only way, you never get 100% clean with either though, its a good laugh though..

Well i can't wait for the event, clean up don't look to bad if you see some of the mud videos.
I'm going to book a hotel in southend and have a main clean up there and hopefully a wam session too! By the way does anyone know any good b&b's or hotels in southend?
Spare change of cloths a good idea, and a towel i think!
