Human Footprint

Just watched a programme on C4 (UK) called The Human Footprint which showed the total amounts of consumables used by the average person during a lifetime. Some of it was funny but for me the weepy bit was when they deposited thousands of eggs onto a cobbled courtyard! I almost cried when I thought of how many eggy sploshing sessions they could have supplied.
Oh, and that's not counting the bathfull of baked beans wasted by just having a child paddling in it!

Yes, I saw it too.

Would have been fun to be underneath all those eggs!

I love the way they claimed in the press not to be 'wasting food'. Errr...don't think the eggs were exactly recyclable!

Makes Gilly's latest update look a bit feeble!

Hmmm, were we supposed to feel guilty or worried about what we consume in a lifetime? While the programme producers "waste" food to illustrate the point?
Ranks with the highly-paid do-gooders and politicians who fly first-class (even private-jet) to "Environmental Conferences" in exotic parts of the world....then come home and tell us plebs to feel guilty about destroying the planet by taking our hard-earned annual week away in the sun in Spain.
Sorry if that's a bit off-topic, it just pee's me off!!!

The issue of climate change shouldn't be about pointing the finger of blame.

We're all on the planet and every single person has a responsibility. Just because some of the wealthy set a bad example, doesn't mean we have to follow suit ... "They're ruining the environment, so why should I bother to do anything."

I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to watch 'An Inconvenient Truth' by Al Gore.

Phantom --- I totally agree with everything which you say.
My rant was directed at supposedly educated and influencial people, politicians and others, who could easily use their position and/or wealth to set an example and produce real good, not just for climate change, but the general welfare and benefit of everyone.
As it is, their arrogance, self-interest and hypocrisy, (of 90% of them),
just pee's off a lot of ordinary guys, who, as you quite rightly say, then understandably think "why should I bother"!
Believe me, I've seen it from inside a University environment, and actually heard a not-unknown "environmentalist" challenged privately about his thousands of (paid-for) air-miles to conferences and the comparison with the little guy and his annual family week in Benidorm. The answer...."That's irrelevant...I'm not interested in the lower orders and their offspring!!!".
Ah well, we know our place... :(

If you are referring to the eggy battle between DD and Sammy Jayne, I'm afraid I can't agree with you, Hayley. I thought it was super fun and the expressions on Sammy's face were priceless! - You just can't beat an 'old pro' for milking every ounce of value from a situation. :D :D :D

Thanks for replying. Didn't really mean to have a go.

Sometimes it just seems that as this world spins towards it's own self-destruction, everyone is intent on blaming someone else. I can see how the ignorance of those in a position to really make a difference could piss you off.

We can't force anyone - the rich or otherwise - to do their bit. But one thing we all can do is do our own part, however small.

If the Arctic or Greenland fall into the ocean ... if the permafrost in Siberia thaws ... if the gulf stream halts - it really won't matter whose fault it was. The rich and poor will all very suddenly become equal.

All each person can do right now is be aware, pass on the message and be responsible themselves.

Phantom ---

Thanks for that very considered reply...I realised that you were not having a go at me, and I am with you 110% on everything in your last posting. In fact, your two postings should be compulsory reading for everyone!

Looking at my own first rant, I could understand if you thought I was one of the "why should I bother" people, which I'm certainly not!

It just pisses me off when so many politicians and influential people are clearly as hypocritical as the one who I quoted.....I get angry that their attitude of "do what I say, not what I do, cos I'm better than you" can so quickly undo the effort made by the genuinely concerned people (and not only on environmental and climate change issues, of course). :(

As you rightly say, we can only do our own bit and spread the word.

Anyway, enough off-topic for now, I guess.

It would have been nice to have had more eggs to get that really slippery look (not quite the number in the documentary but a few more), however for tit-for-tat comedy (with all the right facial exressions) Sammy and Dolly are a brilliant combination.
