I love the documentary on him where he discusses his pie throwing. Using the flour and water to paste two pie crusts together, then take a water/flour mix for the first inch of the base and depending on if the lady he was throwing it at. For those in dark coloured clothes, he would use a meringue/cream mix. Light coloured blueberries and cream.

He would use a shotput method averaging 8 feet tho he did brag about tossing a pie 27feet on target.

I thought it was informative

Is it Hollywood Cavalcade where he demonstrates his technique on Alice Faye?

As the name implies, Hollywood Cavalcade is a series of scenes featuring different film stars doing their stuff - as a result there is no one star so it is not a "Keaton movie" just as movie with Keaton in (along with lots of others).

Haven't seen it in years (I thought it was in colour) bu it does have him demonstrating some pie throws at the lovely Alice.

According to the IMDb it is a mixture of colour & Black and White. Presumably if they are referring to early stuff they use B&W and the more modern stuff is in colour. I can vaguely remember seeing it on TV ages ago but can't remember much about it.
For early slapstick films I prefer to get the actual film if it's available on disc rather than compilations and bio-documentaries.
Buster Keaton was much more than a 'custard pie merchant', in fact I don't think he actually threw one in his films.

Hi all

No, I don't think of Buster Keaton as a pie man either just a brilliant physical comic and gag writer. One of the guys who I'd love to have played stooge to - even if it meant half drowning under one of those huge water hoses used to fill up railway engines. I'm told that the girl in The General didn't know that was coming which might explain why her reaction was so good.

I think parts of the pie scene in Hollywood Cavalcade are in colour cos I recall her dress being red and white...

Apparently it's true that Marion Mack didn't know that was going to happen and was angry at the time but later forgave Buster. That sort of thing used to happen a lot in the early days. Buster used to encourage ad-libbing of activities during stunts; they would never get away with it in these 'Health & Safety' conscious times
