RIP - Charlie Drake

Postby piemeplease » 24 Dec 2006, 15:03

Sad news for this time of year, comedy legend Charlie Drake has died. He was 81 years old.

In my opinion he was a legend in the world of slapstick comedy and provided me with many fits of laughter as a child.

Rest in peace Charlie and keep the slapstick going in heaven.

Well that's a bugger.

Always loved him in The Worker.

Our thoughts are with Charlie and his family.

"Hello my darlings"
Kind regards, Spinynorman and Frilly

Still messing about after all these years!

 I'll second those remarks! Back in the days of black & white, single channel TV I saw him do a slosh (shaving soap) sketch with Jack Douglas and it was one of the things that turned me on to sploshing;- long before I discovered that it was even better when it involved women :).

He was a real trouper in the tradition of music hall performers as well. There is the famous (true) story of when he was knocked unconscious during a knockabout sketch and his fellow performers just carried on till the end of the sketch.

Yes, it is a sad day.

He was a great slapstick performer and invented some amazing routines. I'm pretty damn sure he was a real splosher cos his ideas were so similar to ours. I'd love to have met him before he went (he liked tall girls apparently).

If you want Bill will tell you the full story of how he came to be knocked unconscious (on a live TV show - Bill remembers it happening).

Goodbye, my darling!
