In the great days of snooker on TV, the Canadian player, Cliff Thorburn, 'The Grinder' used to stay at my local hotel/pub and would join in our dominoes group. He was incredibly competitive and very generous; happily buying drinks for the whole bar whilst struggling to extract a ha'penny from his dominoes opponent. When he won the snooker world championship he brought the cup along for us all to see. It was a real thrill to handle the trophy with the names of Joe Davis et al on it.

Spike Milligan not long before he died, when he signed a book for me as a present for one of my family.
He was actually quite cantankerous as he had been sat there for a few hours, yet to eat and the crowd had dwindled and even then it wasn't, according to his PA, a large crowd to start with, the signing was badly advertised apparently.
I had wandered into Waterstones, Oxford Street one last minute, late afternoon, Christmas present panic shop, on the off-chance and saw a hunched, forlorn, old figure that I vaguely recognised there at a table.
A sign beside him advertised " Some Book Or Other I Can't Remember the Title Of " by Spike Milligan.
A vague thrill shot through my body and I was inspired to buy one of his books and get it signed by, I assumed, correctly, Mr S. Milligan himself.
During the signing he mumbled something to me about the spelling of the name of the recipient, I didn't hear him and asked him to repeat his comment.
" You're a deaf bugger, aren't you ? " he replied in a fairly abrupt manner !
I was a little taken aback but smiled got the book ( that he wasn't promoting ) signed and left after his PA excused him !
I am obviously in high, if not good, company . . . . HRH Charlie W received an insult from the very same man too ! I am suspecting there were a lot of people I could add to that list though.
Excellent !
