When I started using UMD, I didn't put a gender on my profile as when I was down as female I would be bombarded with PMs in the chat room. Lovely to have the attention, but a little scary to have it in such volumes! Being genderless saved me any aggro from people annoyed that actually, I *didn't* want to cyber-anything with them.
Although I'm not sure pretending to be neither is the right answer to your question...?
