Davina Reads the News
Nubile newcomer Davina suffers every indignity going as she's first soaked in her suit, then deluged with food, soaked in syrup, stripped and sprayed in paint, covered in mud and finally coated in black treacle trying to bring us her news bulletin. A fine performance from a cute trooper!

Donna Installs a Shower
The lovely Vicky Ford shows us how to put in a new shower unit and winds up soaking one outfit and completely destroying another. First she is completely drenched in her tight denim jeans and jacket, white blouse and knee boots, then she slips into a stunning late 80s-style blue satin suit, stockings and suspenders to try to tile the wall. Instead she covers herself in thick white adhesive and has to take a shower in her going-out gear, stripping at the end.

Karen & Rani Make a Wedding Cake
Busty blonde Karen Partington makes her debut along with her big bosom buddy Rani in this recipe for disaster. Eggs, flour, marge, jam, chocolate, cream are massaged into huge hooters and lovely bums along with cake and egg sitting, lycra filling and Karen's irrepressible humour. As Gordon Brown might say, "A welcome return to boob and bust."

Sammy-Jane's Consumer Pie Test
The classic finale to Sticky Buns as Sammy-Jane demonstrates different types of pies using the posh programme presenter Ophelia as an unwitting stooge! Then it turns into a perfectly performed tit-for-tat pie fight. Excellent acting from Ophelia make this a must-have for any pie fan's collection.

Davina and Ophelia's segments were the ones I remember as the standout parts of this vid.
(well they made parts of me stand out anyways!)

Ah, Sticky Buns - I remember it well.

Actually I think the Davina continuity break at the end is an inspiration - what a way to roll the end credits! That and the flash of you know what really makes the weather girl scene. Videos had to go through the UK's movie censors so things like this were a pleasant surprise back then!

Looking back over the original tape, apart from Karen's nipples, two things stand out:
1) the pacing of scenes - despite the improvised sets, a lot of care went into this video. Filming 'back then' was a bigger deal than now, partly because distribution was so much harder, and one of the symptoms is the slower speed of action: pies were rarer - producers made the most of them!
2) (ironically) the semi-professional aspects of the scenes - these really are girls who are game for a splosh and seem genuinely to have got roped in through their friends. The inclusion of real life material (most notably the Rani wedding) signifies how sociable things were.

Put the two together, and the result is a classic.

I'm with the others on the Davina sketch for this one.....after the sketch I'd always fast forward the tape to see her getting the treacle over the head

This is the first Splosh film I saw, and remains one of my all time favourites. Great models, acting and direction - all the scenes are great, and it just...works.

Putting the old films together and converting them for the internet is proving an interesting exercise. There is no doubt that film techniques have changed a lot over the years some for the better, some for the worse. The action is slower but more teasing. There is more dialogue but less mess. However because of this you have more time for the girls to develop a character so the mess has more impact. The girls were all new to sploshing but less 'blase' about it.

This is due to the simple fact that far more time was spent making them in those days. If you got a one hour film out every three-six months it was more than enough. Now people expect a 10 minute-plus scene every week, so less time spent on scripting but more mess. In some ways I prefer the old days. Chuck Jones, one of the later Warner Bros cartoon directors, always said that he could never put in as many physical gags in his cartoons as his rival Tex Avery at MGM cos he wasn't as inventive BUT he was able to make the characters more rounded so you cared whether they got hit by an anvil or not.

To my mind, character is very important in slapstick, and the girls in these early films were great characters. A girl you don't know not playing any sort of role beyond what she is wearing getting covered for very little reason doesn't do it for me.

Intresting point from Bill re filming. As it's as bit manic at times esp, when you are shooting back to back for sets/sessions. Plus we sometimes have the added problem of filming for other people then, there deadlines all over the place.
