The instant message/chat feature on facebook is superslick. Not a chatroom as such, just a featue that allows you to send a message to anyone from your 'friends' list who happens to be online at the same time as you're using facebook.

You can flag youself as 'offline' if you don't want to be bugged by people instant messaging you when you're busy with other things.

I wonder if that feature would be easy to replicate here? The Splosh forum already tells you who else is browsing the forum at the same time as you ... it would be cool if you could send them an instant 'hello', whilst simultaneously browsing threads.

It would certainly add to the community feel of the site (which is already excellent, I think we all agree).

Sorry cannot agree with this. The Splosh forum ONLY tells you who is online IF they have signed in,at any time of day there are usually a lot more browsing as guests than members and you havnt a clue as to who they are.

Also if someone signs in you can always send them a pm to the same effect instantaneously via Splosh system.

Going back some years i used to use the UMD chat quite a bit and you would find 20 people in chat but the main board was virtually empty,they were all too busy in private chat which to me is just defeating the point.There were also problems ,albiet not often thank god of people stalking others, this has also happened elsewhere in other chats.

As Driversoft mentioned there are so many alternative ways to chat instantly these days,msn,yahoo,aol etc what is the point.

I came on here last night at around 11pm UK time..2 people signed in and 13 guests, what a great chat i would have had

The other point no-one has made is WHO is going to moderate the chat, I know for a fact on UMD Middy does a great job moderating the chat and making sure people use the correct usernames etc whilst mainly staying hidden in the background,however UMD AS WITH OTHER CHATROOMS HAVE MODS IN DIFFERENT TIME ZONES,i think we are asking too much of Bill and Hayley to start arranging things like this.DD is a mod on here but to be honest i havnt seen a post from her etc for weeks, not to say she isnt keeping an eye on things though.

Umd chat has been shut down some weeks back because of continued abuse,looking through the membership list i see at least 2 recent signups using the same username of people that were being warned on UMD,this does not mean they are the same people but think about it,I respect peoples privacy and am NOT going to say who these names are UNLESS the same names start causing problems on here.

I say leave the forum as it is,NO CHATROOM i feel as others have said it will lose part of its appeal and post subjects.

So shouldn't it be "a great A4 print of Dwight D Eisenhower coming out of Potters Bar tunnel..." though what a dead American president was doing lurking in a tunnel in Hertfordshire baffles me.

Dids, try to ignore that funny woman with the big hair and the pie in the face , she is obviously a philistine who doesn't appreciate the sight of an engineering masterpiece! Actually, as a GW man, I prefer a castle or a saint to the A4 which always seemed to be disguising it's true identity under the streamlining .

I guess something along the facebook line is technologically feasble but I wouldnt hold your breath.

We actually already have a chatroom on Splosh that we set up just before wamchat came along and it actually uses the same software so you wouldnt have to worry about usernames etc because if you were signed into the forum you would automatically be logged into the chatroom.

We havent announced it or made it live because at the time we decided against doing it as there were already several chatrooms around and for the other reasons people have put forward here. I'm easy either way I pop into wamchat from time to time and that seems fine.
