Walking ON custard!

Postby driversoft » 09 Jul 2008, 21:30

Apparantly, custard exhibits some elements of "Non-Newtonian" properties, the result being that force is exerted in similar measures to that applied against it - thus walking across the top of a swimming pool of custard is perfectly possible if performed reasonably swiftly and with determination. The TV show Brainiac apparantly demonstrated this, and the clip does look genuine enough.

That sinking feeling

Postby matt2matt2002 » 09 Jul 2008, 21:33

I missed the clip.
Are you sure you're not thinking of the 'walk over hot coals' clip?
That is possible coz the coals don't transfer heat efficiently.

The trouble with Newton's theory is that is only works in a vacuum.
We usually have gravity on planet Splosh - so I think you'd sink.

But please do try it - and have someone with a camera handy!!

you can walk on custard, tis true

(geek alert)

- simply speaking it is the way the molecules compact together when pressure is applied and it takes on the properties of a solid. When no pressure is applied they slide past each other- has to be proper custard powder used though- if you stop walking you sink-

same sort of thing- mix cornflour and water- you can roll it into a ball if you roll it fast enough but as soon as you stop rolling it turns into lovely slime- won't work with other kinds of flour though

It was most definitely custard - and did look both genuine, and bizarre simultaneously.

just playing with cornflour and water is great fun and shows the theory on a much smaller scale.

spent many lessons teaching kids with the stuff.

Oh! Ohhhh yeeeh
I used to think desserts would fail me - how I was a fool
Now I just cant wait till the day when I fill up my pool
And everytime I see Tescos website , gotta hold myself down
Cos I can't wait till their van's calling around

I'm walking on custard , wooah
I'm walking on custard, woooah
I'm walking on custard, woooah
and don't it feel good!!

Hey , alright now
and dont it feel good!!
hey yeh
