I think this is taken from the Maldon Mud race that take place every Boxing Day i think in Maldon, Essex.

Yep - Maldon Mud Race (just up the road from me).

Very over-subscribed and very cold. Not so bad while struggling through the mud, but after, when the fire brigade used to hose everyone down afterwards (they have showers now). Hence a lot of sneaky wetsuits/bottoms worn under the fancy dress.
