A Question for Bill and Hayley

How did the name of your magazine--Splosh!--come about? Rob Blaine (RIP) once told me that that's the sound people make when they jump into a mud puddle, is that true?

Hi

I agonised about the name for ages. I wanted something that was fun rather than 'sexy' and would work in other countries so a 'sound' seems best. Splash! was too wet and Splat! or Splodge! or Squish! too messy. Splosh! could be either wet or messy.

It was one of our readers who started referring to the activity as sploshing and the readers as sploshers, and we did nothing to discourage this.

It's been a good name over the years as it is easy to remember and turns up in other places quite innocently ("I'll have a large splosh" was common on EastEnders meaning a mug of tea!) and apart from the Splish, Splash, Splosh children's books there aren't too many 'rivals' on Ebay, Google etc - neither of which were going when we started!!

Having said that in the 2nd issue of the magazine we had a letter complaining about the name saying it wasn't "upmarket' enough. He suggested 'Peaches & Cream'. Yecchh!

Bill

PS May will mark SPLOSH!'s 18th birthday! Quite what we will do to celebrate it, I don't know!
