I have every DVD and video that has been sold of the Bottom series it makes me piss myself laughing no matter how many times i watch them      .

The Blackadder series 4 was my favorite it handled a very difficult time very well and with humour it also made a good point about the uselessness of the slaughter in WW1.

I still say that now when somethings gone missing, I get strange looks from some people when I say it and a chuckle from 'those in the know' ;)

I first saw Blackadder from series 2 so thats always been my fave ...theres many lines we used to repeat on drunken student nights but I always liked this one....

"Edmund, can it be true? That I hold here in my mortal hand .....a nugget of Purest Green?"

I remember Tim McInnerny coming to our school as part of a touring RSC production and during a Q&A session where we were supposed to be asking questions about shakespere all he could get out of us was comments about him "looking like a bird who swallowed a plate" and Jane "bury me in a Y shaped coffin" Herrington

I wasnt a big fan of Blackader the third, like others have said it was a bit up its own arse, but it did have its moments. Blackadder goes forth was a very close second to the second series for me and the first series kinda passed me by as I didnt see it until years later and didnt think it was anywhere near as funny as the ones Id seen before it ..its a long time ago now so maybe I should revisit it on dvd and now Im older and wiser my view might change...

so my list would be

Blackadder II
Blackadder goes forth
Blackadder III
The Black Adder

A well-thought-out addition to the thread. Nice one!

I agree with everything you said and love the image of Tim McInnery trying to field questions about Shakespeare but only getting Blackadder questions and comments. Brilliant!

By the way - have you ever seen Erik The Viking? Tim McInnery is great in that too.

I definitely think there's a massive follwing who rate series 2 as the best and the benchmark ... because they saw 2 first. Problem is, between series one and series two there was a massive, massive gap ... so it's not only a change in style, but also a change in base audience, as the first audience were about six years older.

Phantom

ps - I also LOVED Percy's face as he unveiled his nugget of green (and later he was wearing his brooch of purest green).

Purest Green.......... LOL . . . . ROFPMSL . . . . . too bloody funny for words.

I liked the first series too. It was a really good idea and I still love the first episode on that series. The bit on Bosworth Field where Edmund nicks the horse if I remember rightly. Baldrick worked ok for me as the clever one, prolly why the twist worked so well in the next series' .

I probably agree with yourself there Phantom, list-wise, although I wouldn't dismiss series three so much.
It probably doesn't appear to measure up because Blackadder II was SOOOO good. Essentially II is where Blackadder took off and made it's mark, after that it could only ever re-hash itself. I did like the Christmas Carol Special though where BA was Eberneezer.

I find all the four series funny on and off, Hugh Laurie as the Prince Regent is pretty damn funny, even if a little predictable. I think the comedy acting by and large was immpecable. Isn't that right Darling ?

You have womans purse my Lord, I'll wager that purse that purse has never been used as a rowing boat . . . . . . . . . et cetera et cetera et cetera !

:D
